DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson will host Lehigh and Fairleigh Dickinson in non-conference baseball action this weekend beginning Friday at 6 p.m. at Wilson Field.
Senior RHP Ryan Overcash (7.50, 0-1) is scheduled to take the mound for Davidson Friday against Lehigh sophomore RHP Nick Cassell (0.00, 0-0). The game was originally scheduled for 5 p.m., but the start time was pushed back one hour. It will be the season opener for the Mountain Hawks.
Senior RHP Brian Russell (3.60, 0-0) is slated to start Saturday for the Wildcats against Lehigh sophomore RHP Colin Gotzon (0.00, 0-0) in a 3:30 p.m. game. RHP Danny Mooney (0.00, 0-0) is expected to get his first start of the season Sunday at 1 p.m. against Fairleigh Dickinson. The Knights are slated to send out senior RHP Mike Eliasen (0.00, 0-0).
The Series
Davidson is winless in three all-time meetings with Lehigh, including a 3-7 loss at Wilson Field last season. Davidson and Fairleigh Dickinson have never faced each other on the diamond.
Last Time Out
Davidson split its first two games of the season and saw their scheduled meeting against Bucknell get rained out. A four-run fifth inning capped by a two-run home run by Rob McCauley gave Niagara a decisive lead in a 9-4 win to spoil the 'Cats' season opener. Sophomore left fielder Forrest Brandt led Davidson at the plate with a 3-for-5 night with a run and an RBI. Senior center fielder Drew Gadaire went 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI.
A solo home run by senior second baseman James Cerbie with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and an RBI-bunt single by junior third baseman Andrew Barna in the eighth gave Davidson a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over La Salle the following day. Cerbie went 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs, including the game-tying solo shot to tie the game at 3-3. Barna also went 2-for-3 and had two RBI. Gadaire went 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs, including the game-winning run.
Freshman RHP Clark Beeker (1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate appearance after pitching the Wildcats out of a seventh inning jam and throwing a scoreless eighth inning. Junior shortstop Michael Zeblo took the mound in the ninth inning for his first official pitching appearance since high school and allowed just a walk while striking out two for his first-career save. Freshman LHP Henry Sisson worked 1.2 innings of relief, and none of the three Wildcat relievers allowed a hit.
Lehigh and Fairleigh Dickinson are opening their respective 2012 seasons this weekend.
Wildcat Notes
Senior centerfielder Drew Gadaire was Davidson's most consistent offensive weapon in the season opening series, reaching base five times in nine plate appearances, and he was the lone Wildcat with multiple extra base hits (a double and a triple). Senior second baseman James Cerbie had Davidson's only other extra-base hit – the game-tying home run against La Salle.
Wildcat pitchers nearly matched both last season's single-game season-low for hits and single-game season-high for walks in the same game. The 'Cats accomplished the former as RHP Brian Russell allowed just three hits in 5.0 innings, and the Wildcat bullpen combined to throw 4.0 innings of hitless ball against La Salle. However, the pitchers combined to issue eight walks, three shy of last season's high of 11. The second-most walks allowed in a game last season was eight.
Dating back to last season, Davidson's win over La Salle snapped a nine-game losing streak.
