ITHACA, N.Y. – Brooke Osborne tallied her third goal of the season as the Davidson field hockey team (7-8, 4-0 NorPac) dropped a close 2-1 game to the Cornell Big Red (7-6, 3-1 Ivy League) on Monday afternoon at Marsha Dodson Field.
Osborne also recorded a defensive save on a shot by Cornell's Marisa Siergiej midway through the second half.
Cornell scored twice in the first ten minutes of play and the Wildcats were unable to make a dent in the deficit in the remaining minutes of the first half despite strong attempts by Finley Amato and Sara French. Osborne was able to cut the Big Red advantage in half in the second half, but the 'Cats could not fully overcome the early hole.
Amato recorded the assist on Osborne's strike, marking her 21st career helper. She is now tied for second all-time in career assists.
Davidson goalkeeper Sarah Fisher, who was named the NorPac East Defensive Player of the Week earlier in the day, had six saves in the game. Also in the backfield, the defensive presence of Madison Parrish was a highlight for the Wildcats as Parish broke up numerous Big Red plays in the circle.
Cornell took seven penalty corners, with the Wildcat defense coming up with the stop on at least four shots off of those corners. The 'Cats were awarded five corners in the match.
The Big Red took an early lead on a goal by Hanna Balleza. Balleza was able to tip in a shot by Elly Plappert to put Cornell in front 1-0 less than five minutes in. Kat Dipastina made it 2-0 in favor of Cornell soon after, tipping in a shot by Taylor Standiford less than nine minutes into the game.
Three consecutive corners with 12 minutes to play in the second half offered plenty of chances to score, and the 'Cats capitalized on the final one with a goal by Osborne. Annie Evans inserted the ball into play, sending it over to Danielle King. King got the stop and Amato took the shot, with Osborne redirecting it in to cut the deficit to just a goal at 2-1.
The Wildcats head to Virginia next weekend for a pair of NorPac games. They will take on Longwood in a noon matchup on Saturday before heading to Lynchburg for a 4 p.m. tilt with Liberty on Sunday.
