Box Score

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Junior LHP Chris Lamb struck out a season-high 12 batters but Appalachian State scratched the tying run in the fifth before a two-RBI single by second baseman Hector Crespo in the 12th lifted the Mountaineers to a 3-1 win over the Davidson Wildcats Thursday night at Wilson Field in the opening game of the Easter weekend SoCon series.

Lamb went eight innings and allowed just one (unearned) run on three hits while striking out a season-high 12 batters, and Davidson (16-20, 8-13 SoCon) took the early lead on a leadoff double by freshman catcher Daniel Gerow (2-for-4) in the third and a pair of sacrifices by junior center fielder Seth Freeman (1-for-4) and freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt.

But Appalachian State (23-17, 8-11 SoCon) knotted the game in the fifth on a one-out double from shortstop Will Callaway (3-for-5), who took third on a failed pickoff and scored on an RBI-groundout. And despite losing staff ace Ryan Arrowood to injury in the third, the Mountaineers got 9 2/3 innings of shutout relief from Chad Farmer, David Port, Will Helms and Taylor Miller (W, 2-1) to take the first game of the series and jump the Wildcats in the league standings when Crespo drove in the winning runs in the 12th.

Senior RHP Andy Bass (L, 2-2) took the loss for the 'Cats, despite pitching out of a bases-loaded, no outs jam in the 10th and stranding a runner in the 11th. Davidson finished with six hits, led by Gerow, who was the only Wildcat and one of just three players with more than one hit. Appalachian State tallied eight hits, led by Callaway and right fielder Jack Myers (2-for-5).

To start the game, center fielder Tyler Zupcic laced a leadoff single to left field, but Lamb came back and retired the next nine, including striking out the side in the third, before giving up a leadoff base hit in the fourth to Myers. But after his seventh strikeout, Lamb got back-to-back ground balls to sophomore third baseman Andrew Barna to keep the Mountaineers off the board.

On the other side, Freeman led off with a base hit to right, but Arrowood fanned the next two Wildcats. Senior designated hitter Danny Weiss (1-for-4) slapped a two-out single to left, but Myers tracked down a fly out by Barna to get out of the inning. Freshman right fielder Kelly Myers drew a leadoff walk in the second but was picked off before Arrowood added two more strikeouts to his tally in what was shaping up to be a classic pitcher's duel.

The Wildcats, though, got on the board in the bottom of the third, busting up Arrowood's scoreless streak of 22 1/3 innings, on Brandt's sacrifice fly. Gerow, who doubled to left to start the inning, was sacrificed to third by Freeman before scoring on the play. Junior first baseman Drew Gadaire (1-for-5) followed with a double to the gap in left field, and Arrowood twisted his ankle coming off the mound to get into defensive position, leaving the game in favor of Farmer. The 'Cats got the bases loaded on two outs as Farmer walked Weiss and plunked Barna, but he worked out of the jam by getting Myers to fly out to center field.

Appalachian knotted the game in the top of the fifth, as Callaway roped a one-out double down the left field line and took third on a failed pickoff attempt before tying the game on an RBI-groundout by first baseman Trey Holmes. And called on in a pinch, Farmer was more than serviceable for the Mountaineers, allowing just a lone base runner in both the sixth and seventh in 3 2/3 of one-hit relief with five strikeouts.

Lamb faced the minimum in the sixth before designated hitter Daniel Kassouf drew a leadoff walk in the seventh. The Wildcats nearly turned a double play on a ground ball from catcher Jeremy Dowdy, but Lamb kept the game knotted with another strikeout before junior second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum stepped on second for the third out. Lamb faced just three batters in the eighth as well, recording his season-high 12th strikeout before giving way to senior RHP Mike Frongello for the ninth.

Frongello faced three batters in a hitless ninth, fielding a bunt attempt and striking out a pair, before Helms gave up a two-out single to senior pinch hitter #J.P. Craven# (1-for-1) in the home half. But Miller struck out Gerow to send the game to extras, and the Mountaineers loaded the bases in the top of the 10th on a walk and a pair of infield singles to bring in Bass, who pitched out of the bases-loaded, no outs situation with a double-play ball and a strikeout. Barna went to the plate on a well-hit ball by Holmes that Gerow turned two on, before Bass struck out Crespo to keep the game tied.

Myers gave Appalachian State a base runner in the 11th with a one-out bloop single to shallow right, and he moved to third on a balk and a stolen base. Working out of another jam, Bass used back-to-back strikeouts to get back in the dugout.

Miller struck out the side of Wildcats in the bottom of the 11th, and Appalachian State took the 3-1 lead with a two-RBI single by Crespo in the top of the 12th. Troutman drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a one-out single from Callaway, and both scored on Crespo's single to a charging Freeman in center field. Miller worked a one-two-three bottom of the 12th to earn the win.

Davidson and Appalachian State will play the second game of the Easter weekend series tomorrow at 6 p.m. Senior RHP Ian Horkley (4-3, 3.83) will make the start for the Wildcats against sophomore RHP Nathan Hyatt (4-5, 3.63) for the Mountaineers.
