Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Junior first baseman Drew Gadaire and junior catcher Seth Freeman each hit a two-run home run, the first for a lead and the second a tie, but the Samford Bulldogs added four runs over the final two innings to secure the 8-5 win in the opening game of the SoCon series Friday night at Joe Lee Griffin Stadium.

Gadaire's (2-for-3, HR, 2 RBI) two-run home run in the fourth gave Davidson (12-13, 5-7 SoCon) a 2-1 lead, but Samford (18-10, 7-3 SoCon) retook the lead with three runs — including Brandon Miller's two-run home run, in the sixth. Freeman's (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) first home run of the season tied the score at 4-4 in the seventh, and after Samford answered with two runs in the bottom, sophomore third baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-4, RBI) plated freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt (2-for-5) to cut Samford's lead to just a run in the eighth.

But Samford closer Andrew Jones (S, 6) stranded the tying and winning runs, struck out three and held Davidson scoreless over the final 1 1/3 to pick up his sixth save of the season. C.K. Irby (W, 2-1) earned the win, allowing a run on three hits in 1 1/3 in relief of Kevin Putkonen, who allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six in six innings.

The Wildcats finished with 10 hits, led by Brandt, Gadaire, senior designated hitter Danny Weiss (2-for-4) and Freeman. Samford tallied 11 hits, with Michael Johnson, Saxon Butler, Tyler Filliben and Brad Moss each recording two.

Gadaire slapped a two-out single to the gap in left for the first hit of the game in the first, but Putkonen got out of the inning with a groundout. Johnson doubled to lead off the bottom half for the Bulldogs' first hit, but junior LHP Chris Lamb, who allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits and struck out eight in 5 2/3, retired the next three straight to strand him in scoring position.

Putkonen faced just three Wildcats in the second, and Lamb struck out the side in the bottom half, though Tommy Corbin reached safely on a wild pitch after the third, as both starters got off to strong starts.

After Putkonen retired three in the top of the third, the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead on a pair of hits and an error in the home half. Moss led off with a double down the left field line and scored as Lamb misplayed a bunt single from Johnson. Phillip Ervin sacrificed him to third for the first out, but Lamb kept it a one-run game with a fly out and his sixth strikeout.

The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead on Gadaire's two-run home run in the fourth. Brandt doubled down the left field line to start the inning and scored when Gadaire followed with his second home run of the season, to left center field.

Samford retook the lead with three runs on five hits in the sixth, including Miller's one-out, two-run home run. Brandon Powell followed with base hit through the left side and stole second to get into scoring position for Corbin, whose RBI-double put Samford ahead 4-2. Filliben legged out a bunt single to bring on senior RHP Mike Frongello (L, 3-2), who got out of the inning with a ground ball to sophomore shortstop Michael Zeblo.

Tyler Vanderheiden took over for Putkonen to start the seventh. Zeblo hit a one-out base hit through the left side, and Freeman used the game's third two-run home run to tie the game at 4-4. Irby got the last two outs of the inning to end Davidson's scoring threat, and the Bulldogs added two runs on a hit and a walk to reclaim a 6-4 lead in the bottom half. Butler's RBI-double to right scored Ervin, who reached on a one-out walk, before scoring the second Samford run of the inning on a passed ball.

The Wildcats cut it to a run in the eighth on an RBI-single by Barna that scored Brandt, who led off with a base hit and was sacrificed to second by Gadaire. Senior pinch hitter #J.P. Craven# (1-for-1) bumped Barna to third on a base hit to left center before taking second on a wild pitch, but Jones stranded the tying and winning runs before the Bulldogs tacked on two more on a pair of hits in the eighth to secure the win. Pinch hitter Gary Cramer drew a leadoff walk and scored on Filliben's one-out triple, and the Bulldogs got an insurance run as Filliben scored from third on Moss' bunt single in the next at-bat.

Freeman kept Davidson's hopes alive, getting an infield hit on a ball hit deep to the hole at short, but Jones retired the next three, including a pair of strikeouts, to pick up his fifth save of the season.

Davidson and Samford will play game two of the series tomorrow at 3 p.m. EST. RHP Ian Horkley (2-3, 3.77) is scheduled to start for the Wildcats against Samford's Lex Rutledge (5-1, 2.39).
