CHARLESTON, S.C. — Playing the second straight one-run game of the series, the Citadel Bulldogs bested the Davidson Wildcats, 2-1, Saturday at Riley Park to tie it up. The teams will play the rubber match tomorrow 1 p.m., and for a second straight weekend the Wildcats head into the final day trying to win a SoCon series.

SoCon Preseason Pitcher of the Year Matt Talley (W, 1-1) held the Wildcats to one run on five hits and struck out eight in eight innings to pick up the win for The Citadel (8-10, 4-4 SoCon). A day after taking the loss, senior LHP Drew Mahaffey came back to pick up his fifth save of the season, facing just three hitters in the top of the ninth.

Davidson (8-10, 3-4 SoCon) got strong starting pitching once again from senior Ian Horkley (L, 2-2), who scattered six hits for two runs and struck out three in 6 1/3. Senior RHP Mike Frongello worked the final 1 2/3 of hitless ball, but Bulldogs got two hits and took advantage of an error for the winning run in the seventh.

Senior designated hitter Danny Weiss (1-for-3) led off the second for the game's first hit, but he was picked off for the second out of the inning. Junior second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum got a free pass, but Talley got back in the dugout with a strikeout.

Horkley retired his first six hitters, until Josh Pless led off the third with a base hit. But Horkley stranded him at first with a ground out, strike out and fly out, and Davidson got the first run in the top of the fourth as sophomore shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-4, RBI) singled in sophomore third baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-4), who went up the middle with a one-out base hit.

The Citadel knotted the score in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a leadoff triple by Drew DeKerlegand for a run when Matt Simonelli followed with an RBI-fielder's choice. Justin Mackert got the second hit of the inning, but Horkley kept the game knotted with a ground out and a strike out.

Freshman left fielder Forrest Brandt (1-for-3) knocked a two-out single into right in the fifth, and DeKerlegand got a one-out double for the Bulldogs in the sixth, but neither pitcher gave up more hits for runs. After Talley retired three straight in the seventh, the Bulldogs put up back-to-back hits to start the bottom half — a double by Joe Jackson, followed by a base hit from William Ladd to bring on Frongello. Ladd stole second and third and scored what proved to be the winning run as freshman catcher Daniel Gerow's throw got by Barna at third.

Frongello got out of the inning with a pair of ground balls and retired three straight in the eighth. Davidson had a scoring chance in top of the eighth, as center fielder Seth Freeman and Weiss took walks, but Talley worked out of the jam with a fly out before Mahaffey got his revenge with a hitless ninth.

For a second straight weekend, Davidson will play a Sunday game for a SoCon series win — this time tomorrow at 1 p.m.
