BLACKSBURG, Va. – Freshman third baseman Andrew Barna batted 4-for-5 with a home run and five RBI, and junior right-hander Andy Bass held the No. 16 Virginia Tech Hokies hitless over the final 2 2/3 innings, to lead Davidson to a 14-10 win Tuesday night in non-conference play at English Field.

It is the first time Davidson (19-26) has defeated a ranked team since 2006, when they defeated then-ranked No. 24 Wake Forest 9-5, and the first time Davidson has beaten two ACC opponents in one season since 2005, when the Wildcats knocked off Wake Forest (twice) and Duke. Davidson defeated Duke, 4-2, on April 13 in Durham.

Davidson scored seven runs in the first two innings to take an early lead before using a seven-run seventh to retake the lead for good. The Wildcats finished with 14 hits, led by Barna who tied a career-high with four hits and brought his season total up to 49 RBI, the most for a Wildcat hitter since Gregory Zage drove in as many in 2006. Junior left fielder Sam Payne batted 3-for-5 with an RBI, and sophomore first baseman Drew Gadaire went 2-for-5 and drove in a run. Freshman center fielder Coleman Barron (1-for-4) and freshman shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-3, HR) each drove in a pair of runs as a part of the Wildcats' seven-run seventh.

Virginia Tech (32-15), who took the lead briefly in the sixth on a three-run home run by Sean Domecus (2-for-5, 3 RBI), also finished with 14 hits, led by first baseman Ronnie Shaban, who batted 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI. Sean Ryan, Tim Smalling and Michael Seaborn added two hits each.

The Wildcats opened up with five straight hits for three runs before Hokie starter Patrick Scoggin finally got an out from junior designated hitter Will General (1-for-4, RBI), who drove in the fourth run of the inning for Davidson on a high chopper to second base.

Sophomore catcher Seth Freeman (1-for-5) doubled down the right field line to open the game and moved around to third on Payne's first hit. After Payne took a base on a wild pitch, Gadaire plated Freeman with an infield single, and Barna scored Payne on the 'Cats' fourth straight hit. Sophomore second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum (1-for-5, RBI) singled in Gadaire and took second as Shaban overthrew home, allowing Barna to take third and score on General's groundout in the next at-bat.

Virginia Tech got a pair back in the home half of the inning on a two-out, two-RBI triple by Shaban, but Davidson kept scoring in the second. Zeblo took a walk to start, stole second and scored as Payne's second hit chased Scoggin in favor of Marc Zecchino. Gadaire avoided the double play by beating out the throw to first, as Payne was erased on the fielder's choice, and scored on Barna's 16th double of the season, extending Davidson's lead to 7-2.

Sophomore right-hander Brian Russell worked an effective five innings in the start, scattering three hits over the third and fourth and stranding three Hokies on base before Virginia Tech put together a pair of doubles for a run in the fifth.

Senior left-hander Thomas Middour (W, 4-2) took over to start the sixth inning and struck out Zimmerman for the first out. Ryan got the Hokies first hit of the inning before Middour and Zeblo misplayed a potential double-play ball, failing to record the out at second as Sosnoskie reached first safely. Domecus' three-run home run over the left field wall came in the next at-bat, lifting Virginia Tech ahead for the first time, 8-7.

Middour retired the next two batters and ended up the winner after Davidson scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Zecchino held the Wildcat bats in check, allowing just one hit over the next 3 2/3 shutout innings, but the Wildcats exploded for seven runs in the seventh on six hits and an error off Hokie relievers Manny Martir (L, 3-3) and Jake Joyce.

Payne legged out a one-out infield single to Smalling at short, his third hit of the game, to start the rally. Gadaire singled him over to third and both scored as Barna drove an 0-2 pitch to the deepest part of the park, over the 400 ft. sign in straight away center field for his sixth home run of the season, to put the 'Cats back on top, 10-8. Sigelbaum struck out, but reached safely as Martir's wild pitch got all the way to the backstop, and General got Davidson's fourth hit of the frame, a base hit into right field, to move him to second. After a double steal, Barron drove both in on a ball hit past a diving Smalling into center field. Joyce gave up a first-pitch home run to Zeblo, his seventh of the season, into right center field to put Davidson ahead 14-8, before finally getting Freeman, who led off the inning, on strikes to end the inning.

The Hokies got two runs back in the bottom of the inning on a solo home run from Smalling and an RBI-double by pinch hitter Matt Blow, before Bass turned in his second straight dominant performance, tossing the final 2 2/3 of no-hit ball to preserve the win.

Davidson will take a weekend off before returning to Wilson Field for four straight home games, hosting Georgia Southern for the final three-game SoCon home stand and the Hokies for a single game on May 18.
