CHARLESTON, S.C. -- With senior leftie Thomas Middour holding the Citadel Bulldogs to just one hit over seven innings, junior first baseman Danny Weiss batted 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Davidson Wildcats to a 5-2 win over the league leaders in the opening series of a three-game SoCon set Friday night at Riley Park.
Middour (W, 3-2) held the potent Citadel (26-15, 14-2 SoCon) offense to just one run on eight hits while striking out four to pick up the win for Davidson (18-20, 5-13 SoCon). Junior submariner Mike Frongello (S, 2) picked up his second save of the season and eighth of his career by allowing just one run on three hits over the final two innings.
Led by Weiss, the Wildcats used 11 hits for five runs, including two runs in the opening frame and another in the third to take an early 3-0 lead, to give Citadel starter Asher Wojciechowski (L, 8-1) his first loss of the season. Wojciechowski allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out 12 over eight innings in the loss.
The last time the Wildcats won on the road against the Bulldogs was April 11, 1998, an 8-inning, 4-3 win, and the last time they won a road series against the Bulldogs was 1996, taking two of three.
Sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire had two hits and scored a run, while sophomore left fielder Seth Freeman (1-for-5), freshman third baseman Andrew Barna (1-for-4), junior right fielder Sam Payne (1-for-3), sophomore second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum (1-for-4, RBI) and freshman shortstop Michael Zeblo (1-for-4, RBI) each added a hit.
Right fielder Matt Simonelli batted 3-for-4 to lead the Bulldogs at the plate, while third baseman David Greene went 2-for4 and drove in a run.
The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the first and never relinquished the lead. Gadaire started the scoring with a one-out single up the middle before taking second on a wild pitch. After taking third on the Bulldogs' first error, Gadaire scored as Weiss knocked a second straight basehit up the middle. Barna reached safely on a fielder's choice before Payne reached safely on the second Bulldog error of the inning. Sigelbaum grounded out, allowing Weiss to score the Wildcats' second run from third to go ahead 2-0, before Wojciechowski picked up his first strike out of the game to end the inning.
After the Bulldogs stranded a runner in the bottom of the inning, Wojciechowski struck out the side in the second before the Wildcats added another run in the third. Weiss notched his second hit of the game, a one-out single, and took third as Barna followed with the second hit of the inning. Barna was thrown out trying to steal second, but Weiss successfully swiped home for the Wildcats' third run of the game.
Middour gave up lone hits in the third and fourth before the Bulldogs finally put together three straight hits for a run to start the inning in the fifth. Greene led off with a solo home run to left to bust up the shutout before shortstop Legare Jones and left fielder William Ladd put a pair of runners on with back-to-back basehits. Center fielder Nick Orvin reached safely on a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning before Middour coaxed a double-play from designated hitter Brad Felder to limit the Bulldogs to the lone run.
Middour allowed just two walks and a hit over the next two shut out frames before giving way to Frongello in the eighth, who limited the Bulldogs to just a leadoff single in the scoreless frame.
With a tentative 3-1 lead entering the final inning, the Wildcats added two more runs on three hits in the ninth off Bulldog Matt Reifsnider to put pressure on the Bulldogs. Sigelbaum led off the inning with a base hit through the left side before being sacrificed over a base by designated hitter #J.P. Craven#. Zeblo's two-out double into right sent in Davidson's fourth run to bring on Raymond Copenhaver, who gave up a single to Freeman to plate Zeblo and give Davidson a 5-1 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Frongello walked pinch hitter Josh Pless, who reached third on an error by Zeblo at short, before Orvin plated him in the next at-bat. Frongello got designated hitter Brad Felder to fly out for the second out, and after Simonelli got a two-out infield single, earned the save by getting Altman to ground out to end the game.
With the weather threatening for Sunday, Davidson and the Citadel will play a double-header tomorrow starting at noon.
