CHARLESTON, S.C. – Junior southpaw Matt Talley pitched the Citadel Bulldogs to a 7-0 win in the first game of a double-header against the Davidson Wildcats, whose late-game rally fell short in a 5-3 loss in the second game at Riley Park Saturday in Southern Conference baseball action.

With the sweep of Saturday's double dip, the Citadel (28-15, 16-2 SoCon) earned the series victory over Davidson (18-22, 5-15 SoCon), who won Friday's contest, 5-2.

Talley (W, 4-2) held the Wildcats to just three hits while striking out a career-high nine in his first career complete game, and third baseman David Greene tied a career-high with four hits, finishing a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Bulldogs to a 7-0 win in the first game of the double dip.

With no run support, sophomore leftie Chris Lamb (L, 2-6) was tagged with the loss, despite working seven serviceable innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits and striking out four.

Junior designated hitter #J.P. Craven# collected two of the Wildcats' three hits, a single in the third and a double in the ninth, in the opening game and continued hitting in the second half, batting 2-for-4.

Sophomore catcher Seth Freeman chipped in a two-out single in the ninth, the only other hit in the opening game for Davidson. The Wildcats though got 10 hits in the back end of the double-header, led at the plate by freshman third baseman Andrew Barna, who batted 2-for-4 with two RBI. Along with Craven and Barna, Freeman added a pair of hits in the second game.

Sophomore right-hander Ryan Overcash (L, 5-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings in the second game. Junior right-hander Matt Sliwiak and sophomore right-hander Brian Russell combined for just one run on one hit over the final 2 2/3, but Davidson failed to take advantage of a few late-game chances, stranding four runners over the final three innings.

In the opening game, the Citadel took a 2-0 lead with a pair of hits in the third, as Greene led off with a solo home run to left and designated hitter Brad Felder doubled in center fielder Nick Orvin, who took a two-out walk. The Bulldogs added a run in fourth and fifth as Greene drove in first baseman Justin Mackert in each frame and pushed across three more in the eighth to bust open the game, including a two-run home run by Altman.

The Wildcats threatened in the top of the ninth getting the bases loaded after sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire drew the first walk of the game from Talley but failed to get across a run. Craven led off with a double into right field and held at third as Freeman singled into left field. Gadaire's walk loaded the bases for junior first baseman Danny Weiss, but Talley got him to pop up into shallow right field to earn his first career complete game.

Davidson equaled its offensive production from the first game in the first inning of the second game, getting a run across on three hits. Freeman led off with a base hit to left, was sacrificed over by Gadaire and took third on a wild pitch before Barna drove him in with an infield single.

Overcash faced the minimum in the second before allowing a leadoff solo shot to Altman, his second four-bagger of the day, in the third for the Bulldogs' first run.

Both teams put up zeros in the middle three innings until the Bulldogs got to Overcash for three runs in the sixth behind back-to-back base hits from Altman and Mackert. Both were sacrificed a base and, after an intentional walk loaded the bases, pinch hitter Josh Pless plated a run and Ladd doubled in two more in the next at-bat.

The Citadel added another run in the seventh on Mackert's sacrifice fly, but Sliwiak picked off Altman for the third out to keep the game within reach for the Wildcats, who got the run back in the seventh. Weiss slapped a one-out base hit to center field and scored as Barna followed with a double into the corner in right field and rounded third on the throw home. Drew Mahaffey took over for Michael Clevinger (W, 3-2) to deal a walk to Payne before striking out Sigelbaum and Craven to strand Barna on third.

The Bulldogs got the bases loaded in the eighth courtesy of an error and a pair of hit batsmen, but Barna turned a double play on Orvin's offering to get out of the inning unscathed, and Davidson had a chance in the ninth. Pinch hitter Steve Blomberg took a walk to start the inning, and Freeman kept things going with a one-out single into center. Gadaire hit a ball to the hole to wipe Freeman from the base paths, but beat out the throw to first to avoid the double play and allow pinch runner Coleman Barron to score. But with two outs and two on, Raymond Copenhaver (S, 1) got Weiss to fly out to right field to end the game and complete the double-header sweep.

The Wildcats will conclude their broken-up series with UNC Greensboro with a 6 p.m. game at UNCG Baseball Stadium Wednesday night before hosting the College of Charleston for a three-game set at Wilson Field next weekend.
