GREENVILLE, S.C. – Chris McGuiness' leadoff home run in the top of the ninth proved the difference, as the third-seeded Citadel Bulldogs eliminated the seventh-seeded Davidson Wildcats, 9-8, from the 2009 Southern Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Fluor Field.
Davidson (18-31) scored five runs in the fifth, after getting down 6-1 early, to take the lead, but the Citadel (35-21) tied the game with a run in the eighth before McGuiness' game-winner in the ninth.
The Citadel will advance to face the loser of today's game between Georgia Southern and Appalachian State at 5 p.m., at 3 p.m. tomorrow.
Zach Kayne (5-for-6, 2 RBI) tied the Southern Conference Tournament record with five hits in the game, most recently by Cory Harrilchak of College of Charleston and Jeremiah Parker of UNC Greensboro from 2008. His record day also included his 22nd double of the season to set a new Davidson single-season record. Eli Benefield hit 21 doubles for the Wildcats in 2005.
Drew Mahaffey (2-3) was near unhittable in relief for the Bulldogs, allowing just one hit over four shutout innings, walking one and striking out eight to pick up the win. The Wildcats did their damage against starter Matt Talley, who allowed eight runs (four earned) on 10 hits in 4 2/3.
For the Wildcats, Thomas Middour (2-8) was tagged with the loss, giving up the home run to McGuiness. Chase FitzPatrick (2-for-5) and Pat Brady (2-for-4, 2 RBI) each had two hits.
Bryan Altman led the Bulldogs at the plate, batting 4-for-5, and Sonny Meade and Matt Simonelli each had three hits.
With two outs, The Citadel got a couple of runs across in the bottom of the first on three hits, but left the bases loaded. Meade singled into center field and scored as Richard Jones doubled off the green monster in left field. After walking the bases loaded, Wildcat starter Ryan Overcash knocked down Simonelli's offering, but another run scored as it dropped for an infield single. Sid Fallaw fouled out to Tommy Piacenza to leave the bases full of Bulldogs.
The 'Cats got a run back in the bottom, as Kayne legged out an infield single of his own and took second as Danny Weiss earned a walk. Weiss was wiped out on FitzPatrick's fielder's choice. Kayne safely stole home as FitzPatrick looked caught in a run down on his way to second, but the throw at the plate went wild. Piacenza struck out to end the inning.
The Bulldogs added three runs to go ahead 5-1 in the second inning. Meade plated Kyle Jordan with the third single of the inning, bringing on Matt Webb for Jones, whose second double off the wall in left field sent in the second run. McGuiness sacrificed for the final, and Graham Chapman made a nice play at third to get David Greene for the final out.
Simonelli doubled to start the third inning for The Citadel and scored the team's sixth run a batter later on an RBI-groundout by Jordan.
A diving catch by Altman at second robbed a run from the 'Cats in the third and an RBI-single from FitzPatrick. Kayne slapped a one-out single into center and took third on Drew Gadaire's base hit into left, but Weiss flew out before Altman's catch ended the chances.
Davidson cut the lead in half, 6-3, in the fourth on a two-run blast from Brady, just fair down the right field line. Cerbie beat out a one-out base hit to Altman and scored on Brady's jack.
The Wildcats kept rolling into the fifth inning, taking an 8-6 lead behind five runs on three hits and three errors.
Weiss took a walk to start the frame and bumped over to second on FitzPatrick's infield single to second. Piacenza layed down the sacrifice bunt, but everybody reached safely as third baseman Greene overthrew first.
Cerbie struck out before FitzPatrick scored from third on the second Bulldog error of the inning, as Jones tried unsuccessfully to pick Piacenza off at first. Brady singled to left to shift Piacenza to second, and Chapman layed down the 'Cats' second successful sacrifice to put runners on second and third with two outs.
Brett Shore reached safely courtesy of the third Citadel error, on Altman at second, allowing Piacenza to score, and Kayne doubled into the gap in left field to send in the final two runs of the inning. Kayne recorded his 22nd double of the season, breaking Davidson's single-season record held by Eli Benefield from 2005.
The Bulldogs got a run back in the seventh, when Jordan (single) scored from third as Brady mishandled Altman's hit in left field. Middour struck out Jones for the final out, but gave up a leadoff home run to McGuiness in the ninth to put the Bulldogs up, 9-8.
Davidson got the tying run on in the bottom of the inning, as pinch hitter Will General was hit by a pitch with one out, and pinch runner Chris FitzPatrick advanced to second as Shore grounded out. But Kayne's record day at the plate ended with a strikeout to end the game, and the Wildcats' tournament.
