DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Freshman Drew Gadaire hit two of the Wildcats' four home runs, and Davidson exploded for seven runs in the fifth to secure the comeback 14-8 victory over the Yale Bulldogs Tuesday night at Wilson Field.
Senior designated hitter Pat Brady's (1-for-4, 4 RBI) grand slam and Gadaire's (3-for-5, 3 RBI) first home run highlighted a seven-run fifth that put the 'Cats from trailing 5-2 to on top 9-5.
Senior second baseman Zach Kayne (2-for-5, 3 RBI) also homered for the Wildcats, who improve to 7-5 overall with the win. Yale drops to 1-3 on the season.
The seven-run fifth turned sophomore Ian Horkley, pitching in relief of starter Andy Bass, into a winner. Horkley (2-0) allowed three runs on five hits in three innings of work.
For the Bulldogs, starter Joe Castaldi (0-1) took the loss, allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Yale took a quick 4-0 lead to start, getting a pair of runs in both the first and the second. Chris Sweeney started the scoring with a two-run home run in the first, and Davis Stanley drove in a pair on a two-RBI single up the middle.
Davidson got a pair back in the third, as senior center fielder Brett Shore (2-for-4, 2 RBI) singled up the middle to send in senior third baseman Chris FitzPatrick (single) and Kayne (error).
Stanley drove in another run for the Bulldogs in the fourth to push Yale's lead to 5-2, but Davidson took charge of the game in the fifth, chasing Castaldi and punishing the Bulldog relief to the tune of seven runs on four hits and batting around in the frame.
Chris FitzPatrick was hit by a pitch to start the inning and, after stealing second, scored on Kayne's double down the left field line. Senior short stop Matt Webb (1-for-4) was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second and both took a pair of bases on a double from sophomore first baseman Danny Weiss (2-for-5, 2 RBI).
Senior right fielder Chase FitzPatrick became the third hit batsmen of the inning to juice the bases and run Castaldi in favor of Pat Ludwig, who surrendered the grand slam to Brady. Gadaire made it back-to-back jacks to push the 'Cats' lead to 9-5.
Weiss's second hit of the night plated Shore (walk) for another run in the sixth, but Yale would mount an attack, adding three runs on four hits, 10-8.
The Wildcats offense, though, got four runs in the bottom of the inning, including a pair of Gadaire's second home run, and sophomore Mac Hunter, sophomore Matt Silwiak and freshman Brian Russell combined to allow just one hit over the last 2 1/3 innings.
Davidson and Yale will play the final game of the series tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Wilson Field.
