CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In their final contest of the regular season, the Davidson field hockey team traveled up to Chapel Hill, N.C. Sunday afternoon, and came home with a 9-0 defeat at the hands of the No. 6
North Carolina Tar Heels.
The loss snapped the Wildcats' season-high three-game winning streak, giving them their first defeat since they fell to Stanford on Oct. 14, and drops the 'Cats to 6-13 during the 2008 regular season. UNC moved to 14-4 as they too closed out their regular season.
Junior goalkeeper Christa Goeke set a new team season-high with 11 saves in the contest in her 61:42 minutes of action, including ten in the first half. She now has 68 total stops on the season, and 244 in her three years for the Wildcats, moving into fifth place on the Davidson all-time career saves list.
Reigning NorPac Offensive Player of the Week Britti Himelfarb fired the lone shot attempt for the Wildcats, upping her season total to 28, second-highest on the squad.
Senior Brittany Rollek played the final 8:18 of the game in goal, and recorded one save, and Sara Stevens was credited with her second defensive save on the year.
North Carolina got on the board six minutes into the action, when Britt van Beek put back a rebound after Goeke had made three quick saves on a series of Tar Heel shots. Three minutes later, van Beek assisted on the goal that put UNC up 2-0, sending a pass from the right of the cage to junior Illse Davids, who scored her eighth goal of the year. Davids had her ninth three minutes later, scoring on the rebound after the save of a shot by redshirt freshman Teryn Brill.
Just under three minutes into the second half, North Carolina's Katelyn Falgowski scored her third goal of the season. After Goeke saved the initial shot on a UNC penalty corner, Falgowski grabbed the rebound and put it back in the goal.
Davidson will now turn its attention to the 2008 NorPac Conference Tournament, which will begin next week in Farmville, Va., home of Longwood University. The 'Cats received the No. 7 seed in the tournament, and will face off against No. 2 Stanford in their opening-round game, Thursday, Nov. 6 at 3:30 p.m.
