DAVIDSON, N.C. - Playing in their first home contest since the end of September, the Davidson field hockey team put together one of their best performances of the season, setting new season-highs in five offensive categories to propel them to a 7-1 win over Bryant University Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.
After falling behind 1-0 early in the game, the Wildcats put up seven unanswered goals, including four in the first half. Overall, they out-shot the Bulldogs by a 22-3 advantage, holding a 12-1 lead in the first half. Davidson had 12 of their 22 shots find the goal for a shot-on-goal percentage of .545, and also took nine penalty corners compared to Bryant's four.
Five different players found the back of the net for the 'Cats, with sophomore Ellie Szykowny and freshman Hannah English each recording a pair of scoring strikes, the first multi-goal games of their careers for both players.
English started the Davidson scoring in the eighth minute when she collected a pass from teammate Sarah Addison on the left side of the net and knocked in her first score of her career to knot the game at one apiece.
Just 56 seconds later, the 'Cats took the lead for good when freshman Kathelijn van der Ven drove through the Bulldog defense on her way to the score, her third of the year, and her tenth point overall, which is tied for the team lead.
Senior Britti Himelfarb gave Davidson a 3-0 lead at the 18:13 mark of the first half when she was able to slice through the defense and make her way to almost point-blank range on the right side of the net when she fired her scoring strike, her third of the year. Himelfarb also added an assist on Szykowny's first goal to join van der Ven and classmate Tyler Kirkland at the top of the team lead with her tenth point.
The 'Cats took a 4-1 lead into the half, courtesy of senior Lauren Calve's rebound goal in the 23rd minute, where she gathered a deflection from a Himelfarb shot in the middle of a group of players, and somehow found an opening to put away her second goal of the year.
The second 35 minutes of action were more of the same for Davidson, in which they put up three more scores and took 10 shots while holding Bryant to just a pair of attempts. Two of the goals came off of rebounds for the Wildcats, including English's second goal of the game, where she was able to bring down the ball that had been blocked up over her head, control it, and tap in her score from the left side of the net. Szykowny rounded out the offensive barrage at the 60:44 mark with her third goal of the year.
Davidson will continue their three-game home stand next Wednesday they return to NorPac play, hosting rival Appalachian State at 7 p.m. The Wildcats will look to avenge a heartbreaking 3-2 penalty-strokes loss to the Mountaineers in Boone earlier this year.
