STANFORD, Calif. - After going into halftime down by just a single goal, the Davidson field hockey team saw the Stanford Cardinal tack on a pair of second-half scores to defeat the Wildcats, 3-0, Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Turf in Stanford, Calif.

For the second consecutive game, senior goalkeeper Christa Goeke made nine saves in goal for Davidson (3-12, 0-4 NorPac), which is the second-highest total on the team this season.

The Cardinal notched the lone first-half goal in the 11th minute of play when Xanthe Travios collected a pass in the middle of the penalty circle, then putting her shot past Goeke and into the back of the net.

Facing an aggressive Stanford (4-9, 2-2 NorPac) offensive attack throughout the opening 35 minutes of the game, the Davidson defense held strong, turning back ten Cardinal shots and allowing just the single goal to go into the break down by one.

In the second frame, Stanford put a pair of insurance scores up on the board, including Midori Uehara's strike eight minutes in. Then at the 50:37 mark, Stephanie Byrne was able to get a shot off in the middle of a group of players that found the goal to push the Cardinal lead to three.

Five different Wildcat players had a scoring attempt in the game, including Liz Luckey, Britti Himelfarb, Kathelijn van der Ven, and Clare Perry, who each had their shot find the goal.

The mid-week NorPac conference contest closes out a three-game trip to the state of California for the 'Cats, who played California and Pacific over the weekend.

Davidson now returns home this Saturday, Oct. 18 to face off against Bryant University. The non-conference contest is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Belk Turf Field.
