ORLANDO, FLA. - The Davidson women's tennis team advances to its 10th consecutive Atlantic 10 Tournament quarterfinals after defeating Saint Joseph's 4-1 in the first round Thursday.Â
The Wildcats are now set to face No. 2 Massachusetts 11:30 a.m. Friday sporting a new overall record of 13-7 on the year.Â
"We completed and fought hard today," said head coach Susanne Depka. "Everyone on and off the court did well with cheering and support. We had a lot of nerves and could have done a little better handling them. We will need to continue to implement the processes in order to give us the best chance to succeed tomorrow. UMass is a tough team and will not give us anything is we take confidence from all our hard work this year and have courage we will get the outcome we deserve. I have trust and belief in this team and look forward to what they bring tomorrow."
Davidson and Saint Joseph's played a tight contest in doubles, with every court being knotted up 4-4 at one point, before Daniela Porges and Kavya Patel pulled out a 6-4 victory alongside Ellie Hammond and Charlotte Calderwood with an identical 6-4 win of their own.Â
Rookie Hammond got the 'Cats started in singles competition cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win on court five before the Hawks claimed their first team point with a court one victory.Â
Olivia Hooper set the Wildcats one point away from clinching, pulling through in a 6-3, 6-3 fight on court six. Bryson Langford was the Wildcat to clinch the match in the opening round as she willed her way to a 6-3, 6-3 triumph to extend Davidson's time in the postseason.Â
Although unfinished, Savanna Kollock was putting together quite the comeback campaign after falling 6-3 in the opening set she overcame an early set-two deficit to 4-5 before the conclusion of the match.Â
