Canon Blasts Four, 'Cats Set Mark in Loss to Hawks

4/19/2025 4:39:00 PM | Baseball

MERION STATION, Pa. — Cider Canon blasted four home runs, and Davidson records were matched or broken in a 25-15, seven-inning loss at Saint Joseph's Saturday afternoon.

In dropping the series, the Wildcats fell to 16-22 overall and 11-7 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Joseph's (18-18) moved to 12-6 in the league.

Canon's four blasts tied the program's single-game school record set when Gus Quattlebaum hit four homers against VCU in 1997, and Canon helped the Wildcats set a single-game team mark with nine round-trippers.

Canon hit a solo shot in the first, as part of a back-to-back-to-back sequence with Eli Putnam and Michael O'Shaughnessy. He added a three-run homer in the second and two-run homers in the fourth and seventh. He also doubled in the sixth and finished the day 5-for-5 with a career-best eight RBIs.

Chris Schuchart added a solo shot in the four-homer first as the Wildcats matched a single-inning program mark for the second time this season. Davidson also hit four homers in an inning at Dayton on March 29, equaling performances from 2017 and 2023.

Anthony Torreso's solo blast in the second made it 8-0, and Jack Cotrone added a two-run bomb in the seventh. With Canon's fourth homer, the Wildcats surpassed the previous program mark of eight home runs, which they also set at Dayton this year.

Putnam finished the game 3-for-5 and a triple shy of the cycle, and O'Shaughnessy extended his hitting streak to 21 games.

But as much offense as the Wildcats generated, the Hawks hung around and eventually did their most significant damage in the sixth with 13 runs off eight hits. They added five runs in the seventh to apply the 10-run rule and take their total to 25 runs, the most Davidson has allowed this year.

Up Next
The Wildcats will host Winthrop in non-conference play on Tuesday.
