DAVIDSON — Michael O'Shaughnessy homered early and had a walk-off hit-by-pitch late to help the Davidson baseball team earn a split in Friday evening's season-opening doubleheader against Bryant at Wilson Field.
Bryant took the seven-inning season opener by a 6-3 score, while the Wildcats won the nine-inning nightcap 3-2.
Game 1
O'Shaughnessy's first-inning solo blast to right-center was the highlight in the 6-3 loss, as Bryant's Brandyn Durand hit two home runs and drove in five to lead the Bulldogs.
Bryant led 6-1 until the sixth when Forrest Lietz and Jack Cotrone drew walks and Jamie Daly's check-swing, RBI-single (and first college hit) through the right side plated Lietz. Cotrone then scored on a delayed double steal play.
Starter Wilson Perkins threw four innings in the loss.
Game 2
Despite being hitless for six-plus innings, Davidson scored a run in each of the last three innings to overcome the two-run deficit and win 3-2.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the ninth, O'Shaughnessy plated the winning run when he was hit in the upper right arm, scoring Jack Cotrone, who had led off the frame with a walk.
Eli Putnam's double to right in the seventh jump-started the offense, and he scored on an Adam Katz groundout. In the eighth, Landon Reeves led off with a double, Will Brooks singled for his first college hit and Reeves scored on a Jouras fielder's choice to tie it.
Starter Isaac Fix threw five innings, struck out five and allowed two hits in a no-decision.
Jason Ban earned the win, throwing two hitless and scoreless innings.
