Wildcats Hold Off Rival Charlotte 75-71

DAVIDSON — The Hornets' Nest Trophy is staying in Davidson.
Spurred by a season-high 14 offensive boards and led by four double-digit scorers, Davidson topped rival Charlotte 75-71 in Tuesday night's Battle for the Hornets' Nest Trophy in Belk Arena.
It's the Wildcats' third win in the last four series games and their ninth in the previous 12. And to get it, Davidson had to hold off a late surge from the 49ers, who had won the last two meetings on the Wildcats' home floor.
Though Charlotte went more than 10 minutes between field goals in the second half, opening the door for Davidson to build a 64-52 lead via a 15-3 run, the 49ers found an offensive spark to make it interesting down the stretch.
Davidson (7-2) responded, though, most significantly when Zach Laput hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to push a two-point lead to five with 42.8 seconds left. That sequence came one possession after Laput secured his fifth offensive board of the night to set up Connor Kochera free throws.
Reed Bailey led the Wildcats with 18 points, while Bobby Durkin scored 14 and Kochera added 11. Roberts Blums chipped in with a season-best 13 points.
Charlotte (4-4) shot 61.5 percent in the first half and led 25-13 before Davidson's offense came alive with a 7-0 run in less than a minute. That included two Kochera buckets, a Blums 3-pointer and consecutive assists and offensive boards from Laput. By the time Blums and Laput hit back-to-back 3-pointers and the clock ticked toward four minutes, the Wildcats had ridden a 21-5 wave to a 34-30 lead and a fever pitch crowd reaction.
Charlotte edged ahead 44-41 at the half before a Bailey layup with 16:23 left in the second half broke a 46-all tie and gave the Wildcats the lead for good.
Nik Graves matched his career-high with 23 points to lead Charlotte.
