DAVIDSON - Coming off of two straight losses, the Davidson College men's soccer team got back in the win column with a 2-1 win over the VCU Rams at Alumni Stadium on Wednesday night. Nico Quanbeck and Denis Krioutchenkov scored, while Noah Louzan assisted on both goals.
The Wildcats brought a different energy to the game from the opening whistle, and it showed after Louzan redirected a deflection by a VCU defender just outside the Rams' goalie box. His touch took one bounce before it was corralled by Quanbeck, who then played it forward on a quick touch before sending a strike into the back of the net just two-and-a-half minutes into the contest. It was Quanbeck's third of the season.
That score stood for 57 minutes before Louzan and the Wildcats were on the hunt again. In the 60th minute, Louzan stood over the ball on the near sideline, beyond midfield and surveyed ahead. As the VCU defender approached, the sophomore from Marietta, Ga., delivered a perfectly-placed through-ball with his left foot to Denis Krioutchenkov, who raced past two Rams and poked his one-on-one shot past the keeper for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
When asked about his stellar finds, Louzan deflected praise to his teammates.
"For both goals, a big piece of it was playing for each other," Louzan said. "It was clinical finishes by both guys, I was just the one passing the ball."
It was Louzan's first assists of his collegiate career after he scored one goal as a freshman, and his first multi-point game as a Wildcat.
VCU made it interesting when it scored on a scrum in the box off a corner kick in the 79th minute. But the Davidson defense held firm.
Lucas Beltran made two saves in the final five minutes, including a layout effort on a shot towards the lower left portion of the goal in the 86th minute.
After the win, Davidson jumped up to a tie for fifth in the A-10 standings after beginning the night outside the top ten. The Wildcats did so against a team that had been ranked as high as No. 13 this year and came in receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Division I poll.
Captain defender Eamon Moylan said his coach's message was clear coming into this week: "Play with no fear and control what we can control."
The Wildcats will have to do so again Saturday as they face another formidable opponent at Alumni Stadium in UMass, who is also receiving votes and sits tied for third in the conference standings. That game will kick off at 7 p.m.
