Men's Soccer Keeps Rolling With 4-2 Win Over UMass

10/12/2024 10:31:00 PM | Men's Soccer

DAVIDSON – For the second consecutive game, the Davidson College men's soccer team took down a team receiving votes in national polls. This time, it was a 4-2 win over the University of Massachusetts.

Four different Wildcats scored in the game, and goalkeeper Lucas Beltran made an exclamation-point save on a penalty kick with two seconds left to secure the win.

Davidson got on the board first in the 26th minute on a corner kick set piece. Ayman Maadir stood over the corner instead of Denis Krioutchenkov, who has taken corners for the Wildcats all season. The lone North Carolina native on the team sent a low and firm dribbler to the top of the box where Nico Quanbeck stepped in and fired a shot through Minutemen defenders for his fourth goal of the season. It tied Krioutchenkov for the most on the team.

"We practice a lot of set pieces because we know that's how we're going to be able to win games in the A-10," said Maadir. "That set piece was one we went over with Coach Jesse (DiLuzio) and Max (Lichtenstein). They work really hard on the set pieces, and I just saw Nico at the top of the box, put the ball in a good area, and he did the rest."

Less than five minutes before halftime, the 'Cats were on the hunt again.  This time, it was the bench that offered yet another spark. Lyman Ott ricocheted a touch over the Myles Culley who then flicked a back-heel pass to Blake Peterson in the 44th minute. Peterson did the rest and buried his shot to make it a 2-0 game.

The home team kept their foot on the gas after halftime and were awarded a free kick at the top of the box just two and a half minutes in. Krioutchenkov and Maadir stood over the ball, but it was the sophomore left-footed defender that took the shot and pushed it through the wall for the goal.

"Me and Denis were lined up for it," said Maadir of his second goal of the season. "I saw a little gap between the wall and I said 'I think I can squeeze one in there'. He (Krioutchenkov) is like 'Alright, have at it'."

"I got a bit lucky with the deflection, but a goal is a goal, and it gave us a big 3-0 lead," Maadir added.

It was indeed a big goal as the UMass offense did charge back. The Minutemen scored in the 70th minute then made things much more interesting when they scored on a penalty kick in the 84th minute to make it 3-2.

Fortunately for the Wildcats, another bench player came through in crunch time to put the game to rest. Ben Minikel-Lacocque scored on a narrow-angle shot near the end line on an assist from Baylen Young to make it a two-score game.

Keeper Lucas Beltran, who made six saves on the night, slammed the door in empthatic fashion by saving a PK attempt that was awarded to UMass with two seconds left.

Davidson sent out a season-high eight shots on frame and limited Alec Hughes, the conference's leading scorer to no shot attempts the entire night.

Next, the Wildcats will hit the road for a huge conference match up at Duquesne on Saturday (Oct. 19) at 7:00 p.m. The Dukes moved into a tie atop the A-10 on Saturday night after they knocked off nationally-ranked George Mason.
