DAVIDSON, N.C. – The second installment of the Carolina Border Clash is set for Saturday, Sept. 24 as the Davidson Wildcats travel a couple hours south to face the Presbyterian Blue Hose. Kickoff is slated for 7 pm ET.
THE SERIES
Davidson took the lead in the all-time series, 16-15-2, last season following its 70-35 rout of the Blue Hose. Last year saw the Wildcats take home the first-ever 1919 Cup.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
Davidson sits at 2-1 after a 56-6 win over St. Andrews. Currently, the 'Cats are on a nine-game home game winning streak – the second longest in program history. The Wildcats are the top rushing offense in the FCS, averaging 350 yards per game.
Offensively, Coy Williams is leading the 'Cats with 295 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 35 carries. Williams now sits in seventh-place in the Davidson history books in all-time rushing hards. Quarterback Jayden Waddell sits right behind him with 172 yards. He has also thrown for 100 yards and two touchdowns on 12 attempts.
Defensively, Jaden Pask is boasting 21 tackles across three games, with Daniel Carter right behind him with 17. The defense has combined for 22 TFLs to total 59 yards, five sacks and four interceptions through three games.
Multiple freshmen have been able to make their mark as well: Cam'ron Willis with an interception, TJ Magee with a kick return touchdown and Mason Sheron with his first collegiate touchdown.
'CATS LAST TIME OUT
Davidson scored twice in a 12-second span of the first quarter and never looked back, averaging 9.3 yards per play (56 plays, 523 yards) and built a 28-0 lead in the first 13:56 while registering their second straight lopsided win and improving to 2-1.
Running back Coy Williams galloped 70 yards untouched up the middle at the 9:43 mark of the first quarter to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead. On the next play from scrimmage, defensive end Jonathan Hammond intercepted a pass at the goal line and scored to give the Wildcats another quick score and a 14-0 lead.
From there, the Wildcats, who had 11 players rush for at least 22 yards, scored on six of their next seven drives. Williams added a 1-yard touchdown run, and quarterback Jayden Waddell's weaving 61-yard scoring run made it 28-0 with 1:04 left in the opening quarter.
Aaron Maione scored three times — first on a 5-yard run, then on a 6-yard pass from Waddell and finally, on a 6-yard run. Mari Adams' 16-yard touchdown run with 53 seconds left in the third quarter finalized the scoring.
Jaden Pask and Marcus Heard Jr. led the Wildcats with six tackles apiece.
SCOUTING THE BLUE HOSE
Presbyterian (1-2) is coached by Steve Englehart who is in his first season with the Blue Hose, who posted a 2-9 overall record last season. They have a win over Virginia University of Lynchburg and losses to Austin Peay and Western Carolina.
The Blue Hose have tallied 337 total rushing yards and 613 yards through the air. Delvecchio Powell II leads Presbyterian with 116 rushing yards on 36 attempts. Quarterback Nate Hayden has thrown for 571 yards through three games and two touchdowns. Alex Herriott leads the defense with 28 tackles.
"Presbyterian is entering year two as a full member of the PFL," head coach Scott Abell said. "With a new staff, led by Steve Englehart, I look for them to be much improved. Last year, Presbyterian had a talented roster and return some very good players to this year's team."
