DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Looking at the box score from Wednesday night's 68-53 home win over Rhode Island, Davidson coach Bob McKillop liked what he saw, first in terms of the team victory and then individually from junior guard Jon Axel Gudmundsson.
"Look at that stat line," McKillop said, before reading off the numbers in front of him.
In 40 minutes, Gudmundsson scored 20 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and had five assists and three steals to just one turnover as Davidson (17-5 overall) won its fifth straight game and stayed in front of the Atlantic 10 pack with an 8-1 league record.
"I loved our aggression tonight, and I think the catalyst for that was Jon Axel," McKillop said.
Gudmundsson was efficient, too. He scored all 9 of his first-half points from the foul line (9-of-10) and finished the game 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from 3-point range. His deep trey from in front of the Davidson bench gave the Wildcats a 62-46 lead with 4:02 to play, their largest to that point.
"This is one of the finest performances we've had from a guard in a while," McKillop said. "This was just sensational."
Gudmundsson had plenty of help, too. After being held scoreless the last two games at Saint Louis and St. Bonaventure, forward Luka Brajkovic responded with 18 points, pulled down 9 rebounds and blocked 5 shots. McKillop said the freshman from Austria was dissatisfied in his two road performances but also remained confident.
"It just galvanized his desire to get better," McKillop said. "He took it to heart, and he came in tonight and the way he started, he set the tone for the game."
KiShawn Pritchett scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half, as Davidson built a 30-27 lead at the break. Rhode Island missed its first 10 shots, as the Wildcats raced to an 11-1 lead in the opening minutes. The Rams (12-10, 5-5) cut the deficit to 20-19 and 30-29 but never pulled even.
Cyril Langevine had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Rams.

Davidson plays its next two on the road, beginning with a trip to UMass Saturday at 1 p.m.
