AMHERST, Mass. – Keon Clergeot hit a 3-pointer with 5.2 seconds left to lift UMass over league-leading Davidson, 54-51, in Atlantic 10 men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Mullins Center.
Despite the setback, Jon Axel Gudmundsson led the way with 17 points and 6 rebounds for the Wildcats, who fall to 17-6 overall and 8-2 in conference play.
Carl Pierre paced a pair of Minutemen in double figures with a game-high 23 points, while Clergeot added 12.
Trailing 38-33 early in the second half, Davidson reeled off eight unanswered to go up, 41-38 with 10:18 to play. Following a Pierre trey that tied the score, 41-41, the Wildcats got back-to-back layups from Luke Frampton and KiShawn Pritchett to push the margin back to four.
UMass (9-15, 2-9 A-10) responded with a 10-4 spurt to retake the lead before a pair of Gudmundsson free throws evened the score again, 51-51, with 1:20 remaining.
The Minutemen finished with a 36-27 advantage on the glass, including 13 offensive rebounds that led to outscoring the Wildcats 10-0 in second-chance points.
Davidson continued its strong play on the defensive end holding UMass to just 38.5 percent shooting.
After the 'Cats used a 15-4 spurt highlighted by a pair of Carter Collins' 3-pointers to go up 20-13, UMass closed the half on a run of its own to carry a 27-25 lead into the break.
