Dugger's Four Scores Help Power Football Past Morehead State

MOREHEAD, Ky. – Junior Wesley Dugger rushed for four touchdowns and 134 yards on 14 carries as Davidson won their Pioneer Football League opener at Morehead State Saturday at Jayne Stadium, 42-31.
In a game where the Wildcats scored on their first four possessions and six of the first seven drives, Davidson racked up 525 yards of total offense (325 rush, 190 pass), to open PFL-play 1-0 for the first time since 2010. With the victory, the 'Cats improves to 4-1 overall.
"I thought this was a dominating performance for us on the road. Make no mistake about it, I thought we made a huge statement for our program to start PFL out like this and excited to move forward," said head coach Scott Abell. "I think as a program we are playing really well across the board in all phases."
Dugger recorded the second four-TD game of his career, having done so at Dayton in 2018. With only 14 carries, the Henrico, Va., native averaged a blistering 9.6 yards per rush. His long carry of the day was a 47-yard scoring scamper, the Wildcats second of the day, to put the team up 14-0 in the first.
Davidson junior Tyler Phelps was also able to air it out, throwing a 76-yard touchdown pass to redshirt senior Kahleel Shaw and setting up Dugger's third score of the day with a 66-yard toss to sophomore Jalen Staples – a play where he was brought down just short of the goal line. Phelps completed four of seven passes for 190 yards and kept one himself for an eight-yard scoring scamper.
Defensively, Davidson played another solid first half. The only early Eagle score, a kick return touchdown from the dangerous Ian Holder that came back 91 yards. Senior Rayshawn McCall recorded his third interception of the season, while freshman Jaden Pask led the team with 10 tackles, nine solo stops.
Next up for Davidson a highly anticipated showdown with five-time defending PFL champs, San Diego, next Saturday, Oct. 12 at Richardson Stadium. Kick off from Stephen B. Smith Field is slated for 1 p.m.
