DAVIDSON, N.C. – Coleman Richards netted his first career goal in the 71st minute to lift Davidson over Radford, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 2-0-0 on the young season, while the Highlanders fall to 1-2-0, with their other setback coming at No. 5 Clemson, 2-1.

Richards' game-winner that beat Nicolas Mertzokat top shelf, came off a feed from Freshman Hugh Chatham.

Prior to the game's only goal, Davidson threatened with a number of chances. Aidan Peterson missed just wide of frame following a through ball from Charlie Caswell, and Mertzokat barely got a glove on Nile Chau's header with 31:41 to play. Chatham also put his only attempt on target for the 'Cats.

Sam Bissett had another impressive showing in goal for the Wildcats recording a game-high four saves en route to his first career clean sheet.

Mertzokat stopped three shots for Radford, which is coming off consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.

Davidson will travel to Asheville, N.C., Wednesday for a 7 p.m. kickoff against UNCA.

Postgame Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
"It was a great win vs. an excellent, talented opponent. I think that will be one of the better teams we face this season. They have advanced to the NCAA Tournament for two straight seasons. Surely some of their players will be eventual pros in the U.S. and Europe."

"Our back four and goalkeeper Sam were tough, courageous and resilient… they were set on not being out-worked. When Jordan Hill blocked a point blank shot in the final seconds, it underlines the team's steady commitment since last winter on striving, fitness and embracing challenges."

"Quinn Dudek gave us a lift off the bench with his strength and effort, and we are all so excited that Coleman got the game-winner. I got choked up after the game talking to the team because Coleman's work ethic to get to this point of winning a match for Davidson has been an inspiration."

"There will be numerous heroes for us this season as we shift the line-up due to the congestion of games and injuries."

"The team is really connected, and beating a quality opponent on Senior Zach Marks' birthday was fun."
