RICHMOND, Va. – Luc Fatton recorded his second career hat trick to lead VCU past Davidson, 4-1, in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Sports Backers Stadium.
Playing its first league game, VCU improves to 4-3-0 and 1-0-0, while the 'Cats fall to 5-4-1 and 0-2-0.
Fatton wasted little time putting the Rams on top as he netted the game's first goal 4:14 into the contest and extended the advantage in the 21st minute.
Trailing 2-0 at the break, the Wildcats cut the deficit in half with Jaylen Thompson's second strike of the campaign off a feed from Coleman Richards.
At the 63:23 mark, Ryo Shimazaki made it a two-goal contest again, before Fatton put the game out of reach a minute later with his third score of the night.
Both teams finished with five corner kicks.
Up Next
Davidson will conclude its two-game road swing with a 3 p.m. kickoff at St. Bonaventure Saturday afternoon.
Postgame Comments from Head Coach Matt Spear
"Hats off to VCU, they are very good, with a 3 game winning streak. We were second best in too many key areas tonight - speed of play, work rate, cohesion."
"To go behind early on the road makes a tough game harder. Coleman had a great breakaway chance in the first half that was saved. We perked up to start the second half by stepping up our lines of defensive pressure. And the goal by Jaylen by a well played pass from Coleman gave us a chance to climb back into the match. But the third goal was an awkward one, then the 4th put the game away."
"Luc Fatton is a high quality striker who was superior tonight."
"Our team needs to look inwards in order to flip the switch back where we are imposing ourselves on opponents. It has to be all 11 players on the field, plus every guy on the bench fully engaged to lift and impact. I know we can do it, and I am very hopeful and excited to see this group respond."
