HARRISONBURG, Va. — Five Wildcats kept their singles winning streaks intact, while two others kept their doubles streaks alive in helping Davidson pick up a hard-fought 7-0 win over Towson to run its win streak to 11 in a row Saturday afternoon on the campus of James Madison in women's tennis.
Davidson improved to 14-2 and is one win away from matching the 12-match win streak set by the 2005 team as the longest dating back to 1978. The Wildcats also won their fifth straight against a non-conference opponent.
Despite the 7-0 win, the Towson Tigers (8-7) made the Wildcats work extra hard for their 11th consecutive victory. It started in doubles play where Davidson pulled out two tie-breaker wins at No. 1 and 2 for the early 1-0 lead. The pair of Ally Sexton and Anna Catharine Feaster were able to keep their 11-match win streak going by securing a 7-4 tie-breaker win at the top spot. The pair is a team-best 12-1 on the season.
Gabrielle Centenari and Elaina Cummer also earned a 7-4 tie-breaker win to give the 'Cats their first team point. They won their third straight together and improved to 4-1 on the season.
In singles play, Davidson was forced into a trio of three-set matches but never backed down and scored wins in all three of them. Feaster, fresh off her second straight A-10 Player of the Week honor on Tuesday, picked up her fourth win in a row by earning a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 decision at No. 1 to reach double-digit wins on the season.
Cummer also made it a perfect day by scoring her 11th singles win by coming back from dropping a 7-3 first-set tie-breaker to net 6-4 and 6-2 wins in the next two sets at No. 5.
The final three-set match was played by freshman Megan Scholvinck and she moved to 3-0 in those matches this year by nailing down a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 victory at No. 4. The first-year improved her singles record to 8-4 on the season.
The pair of Ava Todd and Jenna Brunner won in straight sets at No. 2 and 6 singles, respectively. Todd ran her team-best record to 12-3 by netting her third straight win on the strength of a 6-4, 6-0 decision. Brunner won her personal-best sixth straight match and remained perfect on the season at 6-0 with a great 6-4, 7-5 win.
Giving the Wildcats their final team point was Centenari, who matched Feaster and Cummer with a 2-0 of her own. The freshman dropped a 7-5 first-set match, but pulled out a 7-5 second-set tie-breaker to even the match. She then played a super tie-breaker and sealed up her third consecutive win, and 10th overall, by winning 10-7.
The Wildcats as a team is now 60-26 in singles action, while sporting a 28-18 mark in doubles.
Davidson continues its five-match road trip by closing out the weekend against James Madison Sunday.
