CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Despite a combined 52 points from Jack Gibbs and Peyton Aldridge, Davidson's late comeback wasn't enough, as the Wildcats suffered an 83-74 setback at No. 5/7 North Carolina, Wednesday evening inside the Smith Center.

Gibbs scored a game-high 30 points, including five of his club's nine 3-pointers, while Aldridge added 22 points on 8-of-15 shooting.

In addition to his 14th career 30-point effort, Gibbs became the 15th player in school history to go over 1,500 point.

Justin Jackson drilled 7 treys and matched his career-high of 27 points to pace three players in double figures for the Tar Heels, who went 27-of-34 at the charity stripe and held a 43-33 advantage on the glass.

After UNC (9-1) went up, 56-40, with 12:46 to play, the 'Cats slowly chipped away at their largest deficit and later used a 9-0 spurt to make it a 3-point game, 76-73, with just under 2 minutes left. The Tar Heels answered with six consecutive free throws, to put the contest out of reach

Davidson (5-3) shot 40.7 percent overall, while holding North Carolina to a season-low 37.7 percent clip.

The Wildcats raced out to a 10-3 lead, but UNC responded with 13 straight points and eventually stretched the margin to 12, before going to the break ahead, 42-32.

Both teams had four players with at least two fouls in the first 20 minutes of action, while combining for 20 first-half turnovers.

Freshman Jon Axel Gudmundsson also hit double digits for the Wildcats with 10 points to go along with 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

Davidson will enjoy a 10-day break before continuing its challenging non-conference slate with a 7 p.m. tip against Kansas on Dec. 17 in Kansas City.
