DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson nearly erased a 13-point deficit before time ran out resulting in a tough 44-40 defeat to visiting Radford Saturday night in non-conference women's basketball action on the hardwood inside John M. Belk Arena.
Down 27-14 with 4:40 left in the third quarter, the Wildcats started to chip away. They would score 15 of the next 24 points that spanned to the end of the third quarter and into the start of the fourth quarter, and then used an 11-2 run to get within two points (42-40) after a triple by Chloe Johnson with 15 ticks remaining in the final quarter.
Radford though sealed the win with a pair of free throws from Khiana Johnson with 14 seconds left and the Wildcats' last two shots fell short as the buzzer sounded.
Mackenzie Latt was the lone 'Cat to reach double figures, scoring 10 points and hauling in a season-best nine rebounds to go with two blocks.
Johnson followed with nine points and three steals, while Justine Lyon tallied eight points, a career-high tying nine rebounds and three steals. Saadia Timpton dropped in six points and matched her career best with eight rebounds, half on the offensive end.
Davidson (0-4) as a team pulled down a game-high 45 rebounds, including a season-best 21 on the offensive glass. It has 63 offensive rebounds now through the first four games of the season.
Radford (1-1) put two players in double figures led by Jayda Worthy's 14 to go with eight rebounds. Destinee Walker finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Highlanders held leads of 7-4 and 21-11 after the first two quarters. A Lyon bucket to open the third quarter and one free throw from Johnson brought Davidson to 21-14, but Radford answered with a quick six points to go up 13 at 27-14.
A three-point play by Andrea Robinson with 3:29 on the clock in the quarter cut the deficit to single-digits at 29-21, but Radford answered back with a three-pointer and went on to finish the quarter up 34-23.
Davidson had its fourth straight game with double digits in steals, pocketing a game-high 10 to give it 50 on the season.
Next up the Wildcats will head to Cancun, Mexico, for the Cancun Challenge over Thanksgiving, taking on Toledo and Idaho State, Nov. 24-25.
