DAVIDSON, N.C. – Playing in its first-ever Atlantic 10 contest, Davidson got 32 points from Jack Gibbs and 21 from backcourt mate Tyler Kalinoski, as the Wildcats defeated Richmond, 81-67, Saturday evening at John M. Belk Arena.
Davidson, which competed in the Southern Conference for 74 years, matches its best start under head coach Bob McKillop, improving to 10-2.
Gibbs finished 9-of-14 from the floor, drilled five of the Wildcats' nine 3-pointers and went 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Like Gibbs, Kalinoski hit the 20-point plateau for the second straight contest, while grabbing six rebounds in 39 minutes of action.
Andrew McAuliffe also added double figures for Davidson, matching his personal best with 10 points off the bench.
For the third time this season Gibbs scored at least 20 in a half, as the sophomore put up 23 in the opening period and the Wildcats used a 24-9 run to take a 45-32 advantage into the break.
In addition to leading by as many as 16 in the first 20 minutes, Davidson shot 55.6 percent in the stanza.
After Richmond (7-7, 0-1 A-10) opened the second half with eight straight to cut the deficit to 45-40, the Wildcats responded with another spurt to push the margin back to double digits and put the game out of reach.
Kendall Anthony paced three Spiders in double figures with 15 points to go along with five assists, while Terry Allen and TJ Cline added 14 and 13, respectively.
The Wildcats controlled the glass 34-25 and finished the contest shooting 52.9 percent overall.
Up next, Davidson will travel to VCU for a 7 p.m. televised (MASN) contest Wednesday evening.
