RICHMOND, Va. – Despite a game-high 19 points from junior Brian Sullivan, Davidson suffered a 71-65 setback at No. 20/21 VCU in Atlantic 10 men's basketball action Wednesday evening inside a sold out Siegel Center.
In addition to finishing 7-of-12 from the floor, Sullivan drilled five of the Wildcats' 10 3-pointers. Tyler Kalinoski added 16 points to go along with nine rebounds and six assists, while Jack Gibbs had 11 points, seven boards and five assists.
Davidson (10-3, 1-1 A-10), which entered as one of the nation's top-scoring teams, struggled at the offensive end shooting just 37.3 percent, while committing 15 turnovers.
Treveon Graham recorded his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds to pace three VCU (12-3, 2-0 A-10) players in double digits. Melvin Johnson and Terry Larrier each contributed 11 points for the Rams, who shot 42.4 percent overall.
Midway through the second half, VCU used a 17-7 run to push its lead to as many as 13, 57-44, with 8:16 to play. After the Wildcats responded and cut the deficit to 59-54 on consecutive treys from Kalinoski and Gibbs, the Rams had an answer of their own and stretched the margin back to double figures.
VCU led 38-34 at the break, held a 40-35 advantage on the glass and finished with 13 steals.
Each of Davidson's three losses this season have come against nationally-ranked opponents.
Up next, the Wildcats return home to John M. Belk Arena Saturday for a 7 p.m. contest against Saint Louis.
