DAVIDSON, N.C. – Tyler Kalinoski scored all of his game-high 19 points in the second half and Davidson torched the nets for 58.2 percent, including 14-of-30 from behind the 3-point line as the Wildcats retained the Hornets' Nest Trophy with a 92-86 victory over cross-county rival Charlotte Wednesday at Belk Arena.
Kalinoski, who scored 21 of his career-high 25 points after intermission a week ago at UCF, finished 7-of-11 from the floor, drilled five 3-pointers and had four assists. The senior captain was joined in double figures by Jordan Barham (16), Brian Sullivan (15), Jack Gibbs (12) and Peyton Aldridge (10).
Davidson (5-1), which finished 32-of-55 from the field, handed out 24 assists and held a 37-31 advantage on the glass.
Trailing 9-8 early in the contest, the Wildcats reeled off nine unanswered to take the lead for good. After Charlotte cut the deficit back to one, 35-34, Davidson closed the first half on a 10-4 spurt to take a 45-38 lead into the break.
Willie Clayton, who fouled out with 5:38 remaining, led six Charlotte players in double figures with 17 points. Torin Dorn contributed 16 off the bench, while Pierria Henry added 13 to go along with a game-high eight assists, six rebounds and four steals.
Charlotte (4-3) also shot better than 50 percent from the floor, but hit just 6-of-21 attempts from long range.
The Wildcats opened the second half with four consecutive treys to push the margin to double digits and didn't allow the 49ers closer than five the rest of the way. A Gibbs' free throw with 4:24 left gave Davidson its largest lead of the night, 83-68.
Both teams struggled at the free-throw line as the Wildcats shot 58.3 percent (14-24) and Charlotte 57.1 percent (16-28).
Davidson will conclude its three-game homestand Saturday afternoon with a 4 p.m. tip against Stetson.
