RICHMOND, Va. – Anna Davis and Katherine English each notched a goal as the Davidson field hockey team defeated the Siena Saints 2-1 in a neutral site came on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond Saturday afternoon.

Davis led the Wildcat offense with six shots, four of which came on goal. She finished the afternoon with a goal and an assist as Davidson outshot the Saints 20-14. Melissa Funsten also had six shots with a pair coming on net while three other Wildcats posted a pair of shots on goal in the game.

Carolyn Macek and Emily Leytham combined for the win; with Macek making six stops in the first half. Leytham came in for the second, making one save.

Callie Weise led Siena with three shots, but it was Gabrielle Sullivan who scored the Saints' lone goal of the game. Mary Drabich had 11 saves in net as the two teams evenly split the penalty corners at 10 apiece.

Both Funsten and Davis had a pair of early shots, but couldn't put the Wildcats on the board. Funsten added another towards the end of the half, as did Becky Johnson, but Drabich came up with the save on both. Davis was then awarded a penalty stroke with just over five minutes to play in the half, and successfully converted to give the 'Cats the 1-0 lead midway through the game.

After Siena's Jessica Smith had a shot blocked to start the second half, Sullivan grabbed the rebound and deflected it past Leytham to tie the game at 1-1. The Wildcats had three straight attempts midway through the half, but Drabich came up with the save each time.

With 15 minutes to play in the game, Tyler McFayden set up a penalty corner for the 'Cats. Davis received the ball for the stop and sent it to English, who shot it past Drabich for the game winner. The Wildcats took one more penalty corner in the closing minutes but could not add an insurance goal and took the 2-1 win.

Davidson will remain in Richmond to take on the VCU Rams in a noon game at Cary Street Field.Â
