RICHMOND, Va. – Carolyn Macek came up with nine saves as Davidson outshot and out-cornered the Virginia Commonwealth Rams, but couldn't get on the board as the Wildcats (4-6) took a 1-0 loss to their future Atlantic 10 foe Sunday afternoon at Cary Street Field.
Â
The 'Cats put up 17 shots to the Rams' 15, with Melissa Funsten and Anna Davis leading the way with six apiece. The duo also combined for eight of the squad's 12 shots on goal, while Tyler McFayden added a pair of shots on net as well. Â Davidson also held the advantage on penalty corners at 5-4.
Â
Stephanie Demasi scored the lone goal of the game for the Rams (4-5), though it was Kendall Combs who posted a team-high six shots. Goalkeeper Megan Botteri made 12 stops in recording the shutout.
Â
Davidson got off a few early shots off penalty corners and Funsten had three consecutive shots either blocked or stopped by Butteri. Davis also had a pair of shots blocked to start the game, while Macek came up with a save down the other end midway through the half.
Â
With just under five to play in the first half, the VCU was awarded a penalty corner to be taken by Demasi. She sent it to Erika Bienlien for the stop, who passed it to Kendell Combs for the shot. Demasi then tipped in the attempt by Combs as the Rams got on the board first with a 1-0 lead at the half.
Â
The Rams took a pair of early penalty corners to start the second half but failed to pad their lead. McFayden put a shot on goal for the 'Cats, but Botteri came up with the save. She would then come up with a pair of saves on Davis, keeping the Rams in front. The 'Cats had another opportunity when Davis was awarded a penalty stroke with five minutes to play, but Botteri made another stop and VCU claimed the 1-0 contest.
Â
The Wildcats will resume NorPac play with a pair of matches next weekend. They will travel to Lynchburg, Va., for a noon contest at Liberty on Saturday before heading to Longwood, Va., to take on the Lancers at 2 p.m. Sunday.Â
