College of Charleston Cruises Past Davidson Baseball

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – LHP Josh Renfro tallied 11 strikeouts and six College of Charleston batters had multi-hit games as the Cougars defeated Davidson, 16-3, in Southern Conference baseball action Friday night at Patriots Point.
Junior third baseman Andrew Barna went 2-for-4 to lead Davidson (8-11, 2-5 SoCon), while freshman designated hitter David Daniels (1-for-3) and senior centerfielder Drew Gadaire (1-for-4) drove in a pair of runs.
Renfro (4-1) allowed just two runs on six hits and a hit by pitch and struck out 11 in 7.2 innings. At the plate, College of Charleston (16-6, 8-2 SoCon) had 17 hits and took advantage of five Davidson errors.
Left fielder Brandon Murray led the Cougars going 3-for-5 with five RBI and three runs. Centerfielder Marty Gantt also had a three-hit game with an RBI and two runs.
College of Charleston jumped out to 4-0 lead in the first inning. After the first two batters reached base, Gantt drove in one with a double, Third baseman Rob Harding hit a sacrifice fly, Gantt stole third and then scored on a throwing error and designated hitter Dre Watts then scored from third on an RBI-groundout by right fielder Cody Martin.
The Cougars extended the lead to 6-0 in the third inning on a two-run home run by Murray. Shortstop Bradley Goodson then doubled in the fourth inning and scored on a pair of wild pitches and Murray lifted an RBI-single to shallow centerfield for an 8-0 CofC lead. A three-run sixth inning gave the Cougars an 11-0 lead.
Davidson scored its first run of the game in the top of the seventh inning with back-to-back hits. Junior shortstop Michael Zeblo doubled to left centerfield with two outs and then Daniels singled up the middle to score him. Senior first baseman Calvin Sigelbaum led off the eighth inning with a double and Gadaire drove him in with a single to left field for Davidson's second run.
The Cougars answered with five runs on five hits and two errors in the bottom half of the inning. Davidson's final run came on a throwing error in the top of the ninth inning.
Senior RHP Brian Russell (1-3) took the loss, surrendering eight runs (six earned) on eight hits, four walks, and a hit batsmen while striking out four.
Davidson and College of Charleston will continue the series Saturday at 3 p.m.
