UPDATE: Davidson baseball's scheduled game vs. Elon Friday night was postponed due to lightning. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday starting at 12 p.m.
DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson will host a Southern Conference opponent for the first time this season when Elon visits Wilson Field for a three-game series starting Saturday at 12 p.m.
Senior RHP Brian Russell (4.87, 1-1) will take the mound for the Wildcats in the series opener and will face RHP Kyle Webb (4.44, 2-2). Senior RHP Ryan Overcash (5.96, 1-3) will get the nod Saturday for the 'Cats and take on LHP Dylan Clark (1.57, 4-1). Davidson has yet to finalize a starter for Sunday, but Elon is slated to start another left-hander, Spencer Medick (3.24, 0-0).
The Series
Davidson trails Elon in the all-time series 27-34-1, which dates back to 1908. Elon has swept the series the past two seasons.
Last Time Out
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Drew Gadaire and Andrew Barna combined to drive in seven runs for Davidson, as the Wildcats turned in a season-best offensive performance against NC Central in a 12-3 victory in non-conference baseball action Tuesday night at Wilson Field. Davidson (5-9, 0-3 SoCon) had four hitters with multi-hit games. Gadaire, a senior centerfielder, went 4-for-5 with a walk, three runs scored and three RBI, while Barna, a junior third baseman, went 3-for-5 with a walk, two runs and four RBI. Junior shortstop Michael Zeblo (3-for-5, two RBI) and sophomore catcher Chris Dyer (2-for-5, run, RBI) also had productive days at the plate.
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead on four hits in the first inning. Davidson starter LHP Henry Sisson settled in though and allowed just two hits and a walk over the next 3.1 innings he pitched. RHP Ryan Lowe (1-1) followed with three scoreless innings, allowing just a hit and two walks while striking out three, as Davidson scored a season-high 12 unanswered runs. The Wildcats also set single-game season high marks for hits with 14, walks with 10 and stolen bases with eight.
About the Wildcats (5-9, 0-3 SoCon)
The strong nights for Barna and Gadaire Tuesday raised their batting averages to tops on the team. Barna leads with a .352 mark, while Gadaire follows at .340. Senior first baseman Calvin Sigelbaum saw his eight-game hitting streak come to an end, but he remains as the third and final Wildcat with a batting average above .300 (.323). As a team, the 'Cats are batting .252.
Batting average does not always tell the full story, though. Leadoff batter Jake Berman is hitting at just a .150 clip, but ranks just behind Gadaire (.469), Barna (.444) and Sigelbaum (.400) in on-base percentage at .382 with a team-best 12 bases on balls.
The win over NC Central snapped a seven-game losing streak for the 'Cats that included three one-run losses, of which two were in extra innings. Davidson will look to halt a 15-game losing streak in SoCon contests that dates back to last season. Appalachian State swept Davidson last weekend in the first conference series of the season.
About the Phoenix (11-6, 5-1 SoCon)
Elon has played two league series and is 5-1 in those contests. They opened league play by taking 2-of-3 from No. 30 College of Charleston, and then swept Georgia Southern last weekend. Winners of three of the last four SoCon regular-season titles, Elon was once again predicted to finish near the top of the league standings. In voting by SoCon media members, the Phoenix received two first-place votes and was picked to finish third in the 2012 standings. The league's coaches tabbed Elon fourth.
Catcher Alex Swim leads the team at the plate with a .313 batting average and 10 RBI.
Next Up
Davidson will play its next four games on the road, traveling to Durham to face NC Central Tuesday and then taking on College of Charleston in league play over the weekend.
