Today's Game
• After a week off, Davidson hosts Johnson C. Smith at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium.
• The 'Cats are coming off a 28-10 home victory over Lenoir-Rhyne Sept. 10. Davidson was off last Saturday.
• The Wildcats return 53 lettermen and 15 starters from the 2010 squad, which went 3-8 overall and 3-5 in the PFL.
• Five of the returning starters were All-PFL selections last year, and sophomore quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff was the league's Freshman Offensive Player of the Year.
• The Wildcats are 12-12 in Richardson Stadium in their last 24 contests.
• Davidson is 3-3 in games following the bye week under Tripp Merritt.
• The 'Cats are 6-5 in night games at Richardson Stadium since 1989, including 1-0 this season.
• JCSU enters the game with a 2-1 record and is coming off a 14-7 home win over Virginia State last Saturday.
• The Golden Bulls return 22 lettermen and nine starters from last year's 2-8 team.
• The Golden Bulls were 2-2 on the road last season but have lost their lone road contest of 2011, a 38-35 overtime setback at Brevard.
• The 'Cats were picked ninth in the PFL preseason poll while JCSU was picked 10th in the CIAA poll.

Series Record
• This will be the first meeting between Davidson and Johnson C. Smith since a 17-7 Wildcat home win in 1990.
• The Golden Bulls won the first meeting 18-15 at home in 1989.

Changes in the Offense
• Three new coaches on offense joined the 'Cats' staff in the spring, and the Wildcats are running the Air Raid offense this year.
• Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Matt Mumme comes to Davidson from McMurry University, where he was the OC for his father, Hal Mumme. Hal developed the Air Raid at Kentucky with Tim Couch as his quarterback, and Matt played behind Tim for the Wildcats.
• McMurry finished the 2010 campaign with a 6-4 record, earning the school's first winning season since 2000, placed second in the nation (D-III) with 3,665 passing yards and led all of college football in touchdown passes with 45.
• Wide receivers coach and special teams coordinator E.J. Henderson comes to Davidson from Princeton.
• Offensive line coach Robert Fickling comes to Davidson from West Texas A&M University.

Air Raid Needs a Traffic Controller

• Quarterback Jonathan Carkhuff will be making his 12th start today, and Davidson owns a 4-7 record wh en he starts.
• He ranks first in FCS and the Pioneer Football League in completions (36.0) and yards (360) per game.
• He was one of a handful of true freshmen starting at quarterback in all of Division I football (FBS and FCS) in 2010. He was the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Davidson since Beaux Jones started three games in 2004.
• Carkhuff completed 60 percent of his passes for 2,002 yards and 12 touchdowns with nine interceptions en route to earning PFL Offensive Rookie of the Year honors.
• It was the ninth time a Wildcat has thrown for 2,000 or more yards in a season. His 197 completions placed him fourth on the school's single-season list.
• He broke a 37-year-old record with 41 completions at Drake Oct. 23. He was 41-of-56 for 306 yards. He passed Dave Harper, who posted 37 completions against William & Mary in 1973.
• Carkhuff tied Ryan Alexander's school mark for completion percentage in a game (77.8 percent) by completing 21-of-27 passes at Marist Nov. 8, 2010. Alexander went 21-for-27 against San Diego in 2008.

Claw Marks
• During head coach Tripp Merritt's tenure, the Wildcats are 19-5 when winning the turnover battle.
• Merritt has moved into fifth place on Davidson's all-time win chart (27). He is eight away from fourth place, his former mentor, Tim Landis.
Peter Kidwell picked off two passes against Lenoir-Rhyne Sept. 10, giving the senior seven for his career.
