DAVIDSON, N.C. – Freshman Tim Hines caught a 41-yard pass from sophomore Jonathan Carkhuff with 47 seconds left in the game to lift Davidson to a 28-24 Pioneer Football League victory over Morehead State Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
On 2nd-and-5 on what was sure to be Davidson's last possession of the game, Hines broke free over the middle, and Carkhuff hit him in stride for the touchdown. It was the fifth lead change of the second half and put Davidson (3-7, 1-6 PFL) on top 28-24.
“We'd seen certain coverages the previous few plays, and we were in four-down territory anyway,” said Davidson coach Tripp Merritt. “We decided to go ahead and take a shot because of the way they were playing us.”
Morehead State (2-8, 1-6 PFL) had first down at the Davidson 37-yard line following a Wildcat penalty, but Malcolm Moses-Hampton sacked Eagle quarterback Zach Lewis for a 7-yard loss on second down. After a 6-yard completion, Lewis' pass to Donte Sawyer on fourth down fell incomplete, preserving the win for Davidson.
“We've been in a lot of really close games that have come down to one play, and the game could go either way,” said Hines. “It's nice to come out on the good side of one of those. It's important for us to finish strong and try to send our seniors out the right way.”
Hines finished the game with six receptions for 90 yards, and Lanny Funsten posted nine catches for 86 yards and two scores. Funsten is now tied with Mike Mikolayunas for the most receptions in a season at Davidson with 87.
Carkhuff was 35-for-61 for 297 yards and three touchdowns, and Chris Gorman rushed 18 times for 82 yards. The 'Cats did not commit a turnover while getting four takeaways, including interceptions by corners Adam Dulberger and Michael Corbett.
Lewis completed 26-of-47 passes for 338 yards and three scores, and Sawyer posted seven receptions for 133 yards and a TD.
The Eagles opened a 14-5 advantage on their first drive of the second half on a 7-yard screen pass from Lewis to Desmond Cox. Lewis keyed the drive with a 27-yard completion to Sawyer on 4th-and-2.
Davidson scored 10 straight points off of turnovers to take a 15-14 lead, its first of the game, with 1:29 left in the third. After Dulberger's interception, Carkhuff capped a 65-yard drive with a 15-yard TD pass to Funsten. Then Dulberger recovered a Cox fumble on the Eagles' first play from scrimmage, which led to a 27-yard field goal by Chazzo Habliston.
After Rainer Duzan's 22-yard field goal put MSU back on top 17-15 early in the fourth, the 'Cats went 63 yards in seven plays, capped by a 5-yard TD pass from Carkhuff to Funsten. Davidson's two-point conversion try failed, leaving the score at 21-17 with 12:09 left.
Morehead State came back with an 8-yard pass from Lewis to Ronnie McDermott to cap a 68-yard drive and take a 24-21 lead. Davidson drove down to the Eagle 17-yard line, but a 7-yard pass from Carkhuff to Jonathan Adams on third down came up short. The 'Cats tried a 34-yard field goal, but Habliston's try missed to the left with 3:14 to go.
The Davidson defense came up big and got a stop on 3rd-and-8 as Lewis' pass to Sawyer fell incomplete, forcing the Eagles to punt. Davidson started the game-winning drive at their own 43 with 1:42 left on the clock.
Morehead State got on the scoreboard first when Lewis connected with a wide-open Sawyer for an 85-yard touchdown pass midway through the opening quarter. Davidson drove 54 yards in nine plays, and Habliston made the score 7-3 with an 18-yard field goal early in the second quarter.
The 'Cats got a safety with 4:04 left in the half when a snap sailed over the head of MSU punter Duzan and went into the end zone for a safety. That made the score 7-5 at the break.
Davidson finishes the season with a home game next Saturday against Valparaiso at 1 p.m. in Richardson Stadium. It's Senior Day, and the Wildcat seniors will be introduced and honored prior to kickoff.
Game Notes: The Wildcats dedicated the game to Dr. Robert Whitton, a beloved Davidson professor who passed away Friday night after suffering critical injuries in a car accident last week… The victory broke a six-game losing skid for Davidson…. Gorman has rushed for 345 yards in the last three weeks… Carkhuff has set the school records for single-season completions and yards.... Davidson's 62 pass attempts were three off the school mark.
