HOME SWEET HOME: Davidson returns to Alumni Stadium after going 1-3 in four games on the road. The 'Cats' last home game was Sept. 14, a 2-0 win over Winthrop. The road trip started at No. 25 ETSU, where a deflection late gave ETSU a 3-2 win. The 'Cats won at Campbell and appeared on their way to victory at Georgia Southern, but lightning erased their 1-0 lead and forced a makeup game Monday. Davidson dropped the makeup contest and then lost at Wake Forest playing what was nearly their third game in four days. Davidson plays two conference road games next before concluding the regular season with six home games.
RESTED UP: Weather delays made the end of Davidson's road trip more grueling than expected, but the 'Cats have enjoyed their longest break of the regular season, a five-day layoff in between games.
BALANCED ATTACK: Eight different goal scorers have scored Davidson's 14 goals this season. The Wildcats' scoring offense ranks 69th in the nation, averaging 1.56 goals per game.
BLANKED: The Wildcats earned shutouts in five of their first seven games and rank 14th in the nation with a shutout percentage of .560. Davidson did not allow a goal in the first two games of the season after opening with a 2-0 win at Air Force and following with a 0-0 draw at No. 19 Denver. The last time the Wildcats opened the season with back-to-back shutouts was in 1999. The draw with Denver is the only time Davidson has failed to score in a match this season.
MOVING UP: Senior GK Chip Sanders moved up to fourth all-time at Davidson in career shutouts with his fifth shutout of the season against Campbell, giving him 13 total. Jim Kelly (1983-87) is next on Davidson's career list at 14. Alex Deegan (1991-95) and Soren Johnson (1999-02) are the record holders with 20 career shutouts.
SCOUTING DUKE: The Blue Devils enter with a 5-4-1 overall record and a 2-1-1 ACC record. Duke is unbeaten in their last five games and have moved up to third in the NSCAA South Region rankings. Andrew Wenger is not only leading Duke, but the entire nation in scoring with 11 goals and six assists for 28 points. This is Duke's third Southern Conference game of the season, as they opened the season with a 2-3 loss at UNCG and followed with a 1-0 win at Furman. The Blue Devils then lost three-straight games (two in overtime) to Top-25 teams before winning their next four and tying No. 3 North Carolina, 2-2 in their most recent outing. The only other common opponent between Davidson and Duke is Wake Forest. Duke defeated Wake, 4-1 at home, while the 'Cats suffered a 4-1 defeat in Winston-Salem.
LAST MEETING WITH DUKE: (Oct. 5, 2010) DURHAM, N.C. – Ryan Finley scored two goals and an assist to lead No. 10 Duke over Davidson, 4-1, in non-conference men's soccer action Tuesday night in Koskinen Stadium. Senior midfielder Alex Caskey ended the Blue Devils' shutout bid with a goal from 15 yards out with 37 seconds remaining. Fellow co-captain Greg Macnamara played a long ball to Caskey, who was able to get around the Duke (5-2-3, 1-2-1 ACC) defense and rocket a shot that floated over the goalkeeper.
LAST MEETING WITH DUKE AT ALUMNI STADIUM: (Oct. 6, 2009) DAVIDSON, N.C. - Two goals in the first eight minutes proved to be the difference as the Davidson men's soccer team defeated a nationally-ranked opponent for the second time this season, downing No. 6 Duke, 4-1 on Tuesday night in front of 1,487 fans in Alumni Stadium. Junior forward Yannick Pilgrim led the scoring effort with two goals, including the game-winner. Freshman Brian McGue and Charlie Reiter also registered a goal each.
CAREER YEAR: Davidson scoring leader Brian McGue leads the team with a career-high three goals and three assists for eight points, surpassing his total of five last season.
FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHNG: Two freshmen have scored two goals each for Davidson: F Gabe Rivera and MF Max Riehemann. Sophomore F Chris Pettigilo scored his first-career goal at Georgia Southern and senior D Hunter Hayes scored his first-career goal against Winthrop. Senior D Greg Macnamara scored multiple goals in a season for the first-time in his career with goals in back-to-back games against Campebell and Georgia Southern. His goal against Georgia Southern was the fourth of his career and the first that was not either a game-winning or game-tying goal.
LOWE'S SENIOR CLASS AWARD: Davidson senior defender and tri-captain Greg Macnamara was one of 30 NCAA men's soccer student-athletes named as a candidate for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in collegiate men's soccer. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
RANKED TEAMS BEWARE: Davidson has faired well against teams ranked by Goal.com this season. The 'Cats earned a draw at No. 19 Denver and are just one of two teams to score on East Tennessee State so far this season. ETSU was ranked No. 25 at the time and managed to edge the 'Cats with a goal off a deflection in the final minutes, 3-2.
LIGHTNING STRIKES THRICE: The opening weekend thunderstorms, which affected sporting events all across the country, impacted both the Davidson men's and women's soccer games on Sept. 2. The men's team dealt with a 90-minute delay at halftime at Air Force, while the women's team saw their kickoff get delayed an hour and 45 minutes. On Sept. 21 at Campbell, play was stopped one hour, 47 minutes due to lightning, and the 'Cats went on to win 1-0. At Georgia Southern, the game was originally scheduled to begin Sunday at 2 p.m. but multiple lightning delays ultimately forced the game to be postponed until Monday at 3 p.m. The teams managed to get 67 minutes of play in Sunday with Davidson holding a 1-0 lead on a goal by senior Garrett Bostwick, but since the game did not reach the 70-minute mark, none of the stats counted as per NCAA rules, and the game was restarted at 0-0 Monday at 3 p.m. Georgia Southern scored three times in the first half en route to a 3-2 win. A delay of 1:47 halted action with just under five minutes remaining in the Monday game, resulting in a game that lasted 3:46.
GOING THE DISTANCE: After having not one tie in 2009, Davidson had six in 2010, going 1-0-6 in seven overtime games, including two that were scoreless. The 'Cats have not lost an overtime game since 2009 (Oct. 10 at Elon, 1-2), and are 3-1-7 in overtime the past three seasons.
STRONG STARTS: Head coach Matt Spear remains undefeated in season openers with a 9-0-2 record. Davidson also claimed the season opener in the final two years of head coach Charlie Slagle's tenure, giving the 'Cats a 13-year undefeated streak.
'CATS IN THE PROS: Stephen Curry is not the only professional athlete finishing up his degree at Davidson this semester. Three-time all-conference midfielder Alex Caskey is back on campus after withdrawing from the spring semester to play professionally. Caskey enjoyed a solid start to his professional career with the Charleston Battery of the USL PRO League, starting 15 of 22 games played and tallying a goal and an assist.
