DAVIDSON, N.C. – Campbell quarterback Braden Smith scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in triple overtime, and Steth Monroe intercepted a pass on Davidson's possession to hold the Wildcats and lift Campbell to a 26-20 Pioneer Football League victory Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.

Chris Gorman led Davidson (2-6, 0-5 PFL) with 151 rushing yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, while Jonathan Carkhuff threw for 290 yards and a score. Lanny Funsten caught nine passes for 87 yards, and Jonathan Adams had nine receptions for 78 markers.

Smith passed for 290 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 25 yards and the game-winning touchdown to lead Campbell (5-3, 4-2 PFL). Harrison Jordan caught four passes for 107 yards and a touchdown, and Paul Constantine caught four passes for 91 yards.

After both teams had to settle for field goals in the first overtime, Davidson got the ball first in the second session and drove down to the Campbell 12. Facing 4th-and-inches, Milton Brown tackled Gorman for no gain, giving the ball to Campbell.

The Camels ran three straight times to set up a 35-yard field goal try for kicker Adam Willets, but the senior missed wide left to send the game to triple overtime.

Kurt Odom picked up 10 yards on the ground in the third session, and facing 3rd-and-goal from the 5-yard line, Smith ran in on a quarterback draw. Davidson linebacker Gianni Ricci picked off a Smith pass on the conversion try as the Camels had to go for two by rule.

On their possession, the Wildcats fell behind the chains after being flagged for a holding penalty. On 3rd-and-17, Monroe stepped in front of a Carkhuff pass intended for Funsten to seal the win.

Davidson led 17-3 early in the fourth quarter when Smith hit Jordan for a 69-yard touchdown pass down the left sideline to start the Campbell comeback.

The Wildcats looked to ice the contest with a long drive late in the fourth. Davidson got the ball at its own 20 with 8:03 to play and a 17-10 lead, and Gorman logged seven carries for 26 yards as the 'Cats moved down to the Campbell 23.

Davidson elected to go for it on 4th-and-four, and Carkhuff completed a pass to Funsten, but the junior was short of the line to gain, giving Campbell the ball back with 1:26 remaining.

“It's 4th-and-short,” said Davidson coach Tripp Merritt. “We have to go get it. If we convert that, we win the game. We have to go get it.”

Smith completed a 19-yard pass to Jordan and a 31-yard pass to Paul Constantine to help move the Camels down to the Davidson 12-yard line. On 3rd-and-10, Smith found Chad McMichael in the end zone for the game-tying touchdown.

“I thought our defense played great except for those two long pass plays,” said Merritt.

Davidson struck first when Carkhuff hit Tim Hines with a 38-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter. Adam Willets hit a 37-yard field goal to make the margin 7-3 with 9:54 left in the frame and Davidson led 7-3 at the half.

Gorman scored on a 5-yard touchdown run with 2:34 left in the third quarter to open the 14-point cushion for the Wildcats.

Davidson plays its final road game of the season next Saturday. Kickoff is set for noon at Butler.

Game Notes: It was Davidson's first overtime game since 2008 at Valparaiso and the first overtime game at Richardson Stadium since 2006… Davidson had a season-high 156 rushing yards, and Gorman's total was an individual high this year for the 'Cats… Davidson falls to 2-2 at home this season… It was Campbell's first win over the Wildcats in four tries.
