DAYTON, Ohio – Will Bardo and Taylor Harris combined for 173 rushing yards and four touchdowns to lead Dayton to a 28-0 Pioneer Football League victory over Davidson on a windy Saturday afternoon at Welcome Stadium.
Jonathan Carkhuff completed 29-of-49 yards for 231 yards for the Wildcats (2-4, 0-3 PFL). Lanny Funsten had eight receptions for 70 yards, and Chris Gorman recorded six receptions for 44 yards and six rushes for 21 markers.
Bardo had 13 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown and also completed seven passes for 89 yards for Dayton (4-3, 2-2 PFL). One of his completions was a 56-yard TD pass to Harris, who posted 14 carries for 81 yards and two scores on the ground.
The Dayton defense registered nine sacks on the day and held the Wildcats to -17 yards on the ground. Devon Langhorst led the way with four tackles for loss and three sacks.
The wind was such a factor that after Davidson won the toss and deferred, Dayton elected to kick and make the 'Cats go into the wind in the first quarter. That helped Dayton score two touchdowns in 2:36, and both came in the first 5:02 of the contest.
“Dayton got off to a really fast start, and you can't let a team as good as they are get going like that,” said Davidson coach Tripp Merritt. “They are just too good of a team to come back on. The wind was really a factor, and they made a good decision in kicking off to start the game.”
The Wildcats looked to have a first down picked up on their first set of downs of the contest, but Funsten fumbled trying to pick up the extra yardage and Dayton took over at the Wildcat 35. Harris went in for a 13-yard touchdown three plays later and a 7-0 Flyer lead.
The Cats went 3-and-out on their next possession and were forced to punt into the wind. Dayton got the ball at the Davidson 39-yard line, and Bardo gobbled up all 39 yards on the ground in two plays, giving Dayton a 14-0 cushion.
The Flyers went ahead 21-0 with 2:29 left in the quarter on a Bardo 9-yard rush. The run capped an eight-play 63-yard drive.
Davidson drove 68 yards down to the Dayton 12-yard line late in the first half, but Brenton Goodman missed a 30-yard field goal. A 10-yard pass from Carkhuff to Chris Trinetti and an 11-yarder to Funsten along with a penalty on the Flyers aided the drive.
Davidson drove to the Dayton 44 on their first drive of the second half but turned the ball over on downs. Bardo hit Harris with a pass out of the backfield for a 56-yard touchdown on the next play, giving the Flyers a 28-0 cushion.
The Cats drove 60 yards down to the Dayton 20 midway through the 3rd quarter but turned the ball over on downs on 4th-and-5 as Matt Pfleger blew up a screen pass to Gorman. Gorman gained 18 yards on the same play earlier in the drive. Davidson had another drive end at the Dayton 18-yard line after an interception.
The Wildcats travel to Jacksonville next Saturday for a 1 p.m. PFL contest.
Game Notes: Backup quarterback Chris Cochrane played a few series at wide receiver and caught his first career passes… The 'Cats fell to 0-5 all-time at Welcome Stadium and 1-9 against the Flyers overall… Davidson has not scored an offensive touchdown in the last three games and has been shut out twice… The 'Cats have been shut out in each of the last two games at Dayton.
