Field Hockey Opens Season with 5-0 Win

WASHINGTON –
Jennie Mostellar's two goals and an assist led the Davidson field hockey team to a 5-0 win over Bryant Friday afternoon in the Wildcats' season opener at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex on the campus of American University.

Sophomore Finley Amato (Lake Forest, Ill.) added a goal and an assist, while junior Christine Rua (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior Clare Perry (Winston-Salem, N.C.) notched a goal each. The Davidson (1-0) defense stifled Bryant's attack, allowing just three shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Fisher (Fredericksburg, Va.), making her second career start, turned away all three of those attempts to earn her first complete game shutout.

“It was a great first game, especially having four different goal scorers,” said head coach Ginny Sutton Turner. “We started strong but did not execute as well as we should have in the first half. We sorted a few things out in the second half though, and we were able to put the ball in the back of the cage. Our defense was solid, allowing just one corner and very few shots.”

Rua opened the scoring by putting home a rebound off a penalty corner at the 6:34 mark. Mostellar (New Bern, N.C.) then found Amato for a goal just before the close of the first half to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead at the break.

Just over a minute into the second half, Amato found Mostellar for a goal. Perry then extended the lead to 4-0 with a penalty stroke tally at the 48:12 mark. Mostellar capped the scoring on a breakaway created by a pass from senior Courtney Tobe (Prospect, Ky.).

Davidson outshot Bryant (0-1) 15-3 and held a 13-1 advantage in penalty corners.

The Wildcats will return to action at the William I. Jacobs Recreational Complex Saturday at 2 p.m. against St. Francis.

“We'll carry the momentum from this win into tomorrow,” said Turner. “It's a good feeling to the start the season with a great shutout win.
