CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Kyle Stewart struck out 10 and Trevor Collias drove in four runs to lead the Western Carolina Catamounts to an 11-2 win over the Davidson Wildcats in the SoCon series finale Saturday afternoon at Hennon Stadium.
Stewart (W, 2-2) scattered five hits through six innings and walked just one while striking out 10 to earn the win for Western Carolina (34-19-1, 16-13-1 SoCon).
In his final game, senior catcher Tommy Piacenza went a perfect 4-for-4 and hit his first home run of the season in the ninth, but Davidson (19-32, 5-25 SoCon) was trailing 10-1. The Wildcats got their other run in the eighth when sophomore first baseman Drew Gadaire doubled in sophomore center fielder Seth Freeman, who reached on the only error of the game to start the inning.
Gadaire, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Piacenza accounted for seven of the Wildcats' eight hits, with junior left fielder Sam Payne getting the other, a two-out base hit in the third.
The Catamounts finished with 13 hits, led by Collias, who went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the final game. Second baseman Ross Heffley also had a good day for the Catamounts, batting 3-for-5 with three RBI.
Sophomore right-hander Ryan Overcash (L, 5-4) took the loss for Davidson, allowing six runs on seven hits and striking out a pair in four innings in the start.
Collias' two-run home run in the second put the Catamounts on the scoreboard, and they tacked on two more in the third behind a two-RBI double from Heffley. Designated hitter Russell Robertson doubled in right fielder Cameron Dullnig, who led off with a base hit in the fourth, to push the lead to 5-0.
Junior right-hander Ian Horkley took over for Overcash after first baseman Matt Johns' leadoff single in the fifth, but Heffley drove in his third run with a double to right in the next at-bat. After third baseman Tyler Kirkpatrick drew a walk, Horkley got a ground ball from Collias, but Dullnig's triple into right field cleared the bases and extended Western's lead to 8-0.
The Catamounts added two more runs in the sixth, as junior left-hander Mac Hunter started the inning with a pair of quick outs before loading the bases on back-to-back hits by Johns and Heffley and Kirkpatrick's second walk. Collias' double into left field scored Heffley and Johns, before Hunter got Dullnig to fly out and strand a pair of runners.
Junior right-hander Matt Sliwiak was a bright spot, striking out the side of Catamounts in the seventh, before Western got its final run in the eighth on a solo leadoff home run by shortstop Austin Schultz off senior left-hander Mac Read, who retired his next three hitters.
