DAVIDSON, N.C. – For the second straight night, the game wasn't decided until the late innings, as the Western Carolina Catamounts used a three-run eighth for a 7-5 comeback win over the Davidson Wildcats to win the SoCon series Friday night at Hennon Stadium.

Freshman shortstop Michael Zeblo (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) tied the game for Davidson (19-31, 5-24 SoCon) with a leadoff solo home run in the third, but Western Carolina (33-19-1, 15-13-1 SoCon) went back ahead with two runs in the bottom half inning. Davidson, though, put up three runs in the top of the fourth when freshman center fielder Coleman Barron (1-for-4, 2 RBI) and Zeblo hit back-to-back triples and added another run in the fifth on freshman third baseman Andrew Barna's (1-for-4, HR) seventh home run of the season to push its lead to 5-3.

The Catamounts began their comeback with a run in the bottom half inning on an RBI-single by catcher Ollie Goulder and took the lead for good with three runs in the eighth to secure the series.

The Wildcats finished with 10 hits, led by junior designated hitter #J.P. Craven# (3-for-3). Sophomore second baseman Calvin Sigelbaum (2-for-4) and Zeblo also had a pair of hits for the Wildcats.

Western Carolina finished with 12 hits, paced by second baseman Matt Johns (4-for-5, 2 RBI). Third baseman Tyler Kirkpatrick (2-for-3) and Goulder also had two hits for the Catamounts.

For the second straight night, both starting pitchers were effective and worked deep into the game. Sophomore left-hander Chris Lamb allowed four runs on 11 hits and struck out six in seven innings for the Wildcats, but sophomore right-hander Brian Russell (L, 3-4) took the loss after giving up three runs (two earned) on one hit in just 1/3 of an inning of relief. For Western, Taylor Sandefur allowed five runs on nine hits and also struck out six in seven innings, but Vance Chavis (W, 3-4) earned the win working a hitless 2/3 of an inning, while Brandon Johnson (S, 2) earned his second save of the season by getting a double-play ball to end the game.

Western Carolina got on the scoreboard with a run in the second. Goulder struck out for what would have been the second out but reached safely on a wild pitch and scored as left fielder Cameron Dullnig knocked a two-out base hit to right center. Davidson knotted the game on Zeblo's home run in the third.

The Catamounts, though, went back on top with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead. Johns doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on a fly out in the next at-bat. Designated hitter Travis Collias' sacrifice fly drove in the first run, and Goulder and right fielder Bryant Notebloom followed with a pair of consecutive base hits for a second.

But Davidson retook the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth on back-to-back triples from Barron and Zeblo. Craven (walk) and Sigelbaum (single) each scored on the first, before Zeblo tripled in Barron to put the 'Cats ahead, 4-3.

A one-out home run by Barna extended their lead, and Craven and Sigelbaum followed with a pair of hits, but Sigelbaum was thrown out at home for the second out. Sandefur got a groundout in the next play to end the inning, and Western Carolina got a run back in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of a leadoff walk, as Goulder hit a two-out, RBI-single into center field, to cut Davidson's lead to 5-4.

Russell took over for Lamb to start the eighth and hit Dullnig, who stole second and advanced to third on an error after a foul out for the first out. Shortstop Austin Schultz walked, and both scored as Johns doubled into the gap in right center and scored, after taking third on the throw in and continuing home on an error by Sigelbaum at second to put the Catamounts ahead, 7-5.

Sophomore catcher Seth Freeman took a walk to lead off the top of the ninth, but Chavis retired his next hitter before Johnson coaxed a double-play ball in the next at-bat to end the game.

Davidson and Western Carolina will play the final game of the Wildcats' season tomorrow at 3 p.m.
