DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Center fielder Wayne Miller batted 6-for-7 with three RBI to lead the Samford Bulldogs to a 16-6 win over the Davidson Wildcats in the opening game of a three-game SoCon set Thursday night at Wilson Field.
The leadoff hitter for Samford (15-10, 6-1 SoCon), Miller recorded a hit in his first six at-bats before junior right-hander Matt Sliwiak struck him out in his final plate appearance. The Bulldogs used 20 hits to score 16 runs as Davidson (13-13, 4-7 SoCon) dropped its sixth straight game.
Entering the game leading the SoCon in batting average, junior first baseman Danny Weiss continued to be a bright spot for the Davidson offense, driving in a pair of runs on a two-run home run in the seventh, while sophomore center fielder Drew Gadaire paced the 'Cats at the plate with a 2-for-5 night to extend his hitting streak to 13 games and tie freshman third baseman Andrew Barna's mark from earlier in the season. Sophomore designated hitter Calvin Sigelbaum was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate, including his first collegiate home run, a solo shot to lead off the fifth.
Sigelbaum's score, though, was just the first of the night for the 'Cats, who got down 10-0 after Samford scored a pair of runs in both the first and second before adding six, including a pair of two-run home runs, in the fourth to open the large lead. Bulldog shortstop Mason Meredeth made a couple of impressive plays in the opening frame, going a long way to chase down a foul ball off sophomore second baseman James Cerbie and robbing a base hit from Weiss on a liner for the third out, to stifle the Wildcat hitters early.
On the offensive end, Meredeth punished the Wildcats as well, hitting a grand slam of sophomore right-hander Michael Loeb in the sixth to extend Samford's lead to 14-1. Entering in relief of Wildcat starter Ian Horkley in the fourth, senior left-hander Mac Read allowed a pair of walks and a base hit in the sixth to load the bases for Meredeth, who got four of his game-high five RBI on the round-tripper.
Davidson got three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning, as Gadaire singled into left field and moved to second when Weiss was plucked. Barna doubled into left field to score Gadaire, and senior catcher Tommy Piacenza's sacrifice fly allowed Weiss to score from third. Sigelbaum got his second hit, a double into the gap in right center field to plate Barna, but Samford starter Jonathan Stephens got sophomore left fielder Jake Berman to ground out before giving way to reliever Sean Handlan, who struck out freshman shortstop Michael Zeblo to end the inning.
The Bulldogs got another run in the seventh on Miller's sixth hit, an RBI-single into right field, before Davidson added its final runs in the seventh on Weiss' team-leading sixth home run of the season. After Handlan walked junior right fielder Sam Payne, Michael Gunter took the mound and, after allowing the two-out homer to Weiss, worked an otherwise hitless three innings to close out the game and earn his first save of the season.
Samford got its final run in the ninth as right fielder Trey Hayes hit a leadoff double and scored on a groundout two batters later.
Stephens improved to a perfect 5-0, scattering six hits for four runs through 5 2/3 innings to earn the win, while Horkley took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Davidson and Samford will play the second game of the series at 6 p.m. tomorrow and the finale at 2 p.m. Saturday.
