Charleston Sweeps Davidson with 27-10 Win Sunday

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- The College of Charleston Cougars secured the Southern Conference series sweep with a 27-10 victory over the Davidson Wildcats Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point.
Charleston (30-16, 14-10 SoCon) jumped out to a 27-1 lead after six innings, and Davidson (17-25, 11-13 SoCon) scored nine of its 10 runs in the last two innings.
Charleston recorded 28 hits to 16 for the Wildcats and had seven players with at least three hits, led by a 5-for-6 performance from Clay McCord. Brandon Sizemore drove in a game-high seven RBI. Matt Mansilla homered twice in the game.
Zach Kayne led the Wildcats, batting 4-for-6 with a pair of RBI, and Drew Gadaire was 3-for-6 with an RBI. Pinch hitter Will General was a perfect 2-for-2 and drove in a team-high four RBI. On the mound, Ian Horkley (2-2) took the loss, allowing six runs on eight hits with one strikeout in just 2/3 of an inning.
David Peterson (6-2) earned the win, allowing just one run on eight hits with six strikeouts in six innings.
The Cougars got five straight base hits for a pair of runs before Mansilla's grand slam cleared the bases. Andy Bass took over for Horkley and got Joey Bergman to fly out and end the inning, but the damage gave the Cougars a 6-0 lead after the first.
Davidson got a run across in the second as James Cerbie doubled down the right field line, moved to third on Sam Payne's base hit and scored as Graham Chapman posted the third straight hit.
Charleston opened the game up with nine runs in the third, highlighted by a two-RBI single from Ryan Daniels and a two-run home run from Cole Rakar for his second hit of the inning, to take an 15-1 lead.
The Cougars added a run in the fourth and tacked on seven more in the fifth to go ahead 23-1. Daniels and Mansilla hit back-to-back home runs, and Sizemore recorded Charleston's second grand slam of the day, as part of the Cougars' seven hits in the inning. Charleston completed its scoring with four runs in the sixth on four hits.
Davidson sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth inning and converted four hits into six runs. Jay Honeycutt was hit by a pitch, but eliminated on Seth Freeman's fielder's choice in the next at-bat. After Freeman took second on a wild pitch, Chris FitzPatrick drew a walk, and Pat Brady was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Calvin Sigelbaum (single) and General plated three runs, and Sigelbaum scored from third on a wild pitch before Kayne's two-run home run, his eighth of the season, to the left side sent in the final two runs.
The Wildcats finished their day with three runs on four hits in the final inning. General hit a two-run, two-out home run, and Gadaire drove in Kayne (double) for the final run of the game.
Davidson will finish the regular season with five straight home games. The Wildcats host Duke Tuesday at 7 p.m. and Virginia Tech Wednesday at 6 p.m. After a weekend off, Davidson will conclude the season with a three-game homestand against Western Carolina May 14-16.
