Box Score
STATESBORO, Ga. -- Chris Mederos allowed just four hits for one run over eight innings, and the Georgia Southern Eagles scored seven runs in the seventh en route to a 12-7 win over the Davidson Wildcats Friday night in Southern Conference baseball action at J.I. Clements Stadium.
Georgia Southern improves to 26-9 overall and 10-4 in the SoCon. Davidson drops to 13-18 and an even 8-8 in league play.
Mederos (8-0) remains perfect, holding the Wildcats to a single run on four hits in eight innings while striking out nine and walking a pair. At the plate, left fielder Ty Wright went 4-for-4 with three RBI, while Eric Phillips and Brian Pierce each had three hits.
For the Wildcats, Thomas Middour (2-4) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits in six innings. Graham Chapman and Drew Gadaire collected a pair of hits apiece to lead Davidson.
The 'Cats picked up the first run of the game in the second. Right fielder Chase FitzPatrick drew a walk, and catcher Tommy Piacenza followed with a base hit. Both took a base on a passed ball, and FitzPatrick scored on a Chris FitzPatrick groundout.
Georgia Southern added single runs in the second, third and fourth to take a slight 3-1 lead, but the Wildcats could not solve Mederos.
The Eagles, though, busted the game open with a seven-run seventh, getting six hits off relievers Ian Horkley and Mike Frongello before Andy Bass came out of the pen to get the final two outs.
Georgia Southern added two runs on a two-RBI home run from Phillip Porter in the eighth, before the Wildcats finally got to the Eagle bullpen for six runs in the ninth.
Dexter Bobo gave up a leadoff home run to Gadaire. Danny Weiss followed with a walk, and pinch hitter Jay Honeycutt doubled to move him around to third. The Wildcats followed a Chase FitzPatrick strike out with a barrage of base hits, as Seth Freeman, Chris FitzPatrick, Will General and Chapman strung together four straight hits for five runs.
Zach Kayne flew out, ending a team-best 13-game hitting streak and failing to reach base safely the first time this season, and Gadaire ran out of magic, too, grounding out in his second at-bat of the inning to end the rally and thus, game.
Davidson and Georgia Southern will play the second game of the series tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
