ELON, N.C. -- The Davidson Wildcats held the Elon Phoenix to just three hits, one for extra bases, while collecting 13, including three home runs, in a 7-1 victory in Southern Conference baseball action Friday night at Latham Park.
Thomas Middour (2-0) was stellar for the Wildcats (8-6, 3-1), allowing just two hits - infield singles in the third and fourth in 6 2/3 shutout innings.
Mike Melillo, who provided the only offense for the Phoenix with two of their three hits, hit a solo home run in the eighth to prevent the shutout, but Matt Webb did not allow a hit over the last 1 2/3 innings.
In support of the Wildcat pitching staff, senior center fielder Brett Shore led the offense, batting 3-for-6, while Chase FitzPatrick, Drew Gadaire, Chris FitzPatrick and Seth Freeman each had two hits. Chase FitzPatrick and Gadaire each hit two-run home runs, and Freeman had a solo shot.
For Elon (8-5, 3-3), Ken Ferrer (3-1) allowed five runs (four earned) on nine hits and lasted just 4 2/3 innings in the start.
Shore and Chris FitzPatrick recorded the first two hits of the game, with a lone hit coming for the Wildcats in both the first and the second, before Freeman led off the third frame with a home run, his second of the season, to give the 'Cats a run.
Davidson extended its lead to 3-0 in the fourth, as Pat Brady hit a one-out triple into right field and Gadaire followed with a home run into left center, his third of the season.
The 'Cats offense kept rolling and manufactured a pair of runs on three hits in the fifth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Danny Weiss and Chase FitzPatrick started the inning with back-to-back base hits, and after a one-out fielder's choice by Gadaire erased Chase FitzPatrick, Chris FitzPatrick singled through the right side to send in Weiss to make it 4-0.
The Wildcats were able to take advantage of a few miscues to continue the inning as Freeman drew a walk to load the bases and Graham Chapman reached on an error to the third baseman that extended play and allowed Gadaire to score and push the lead to 5-0.
Unlike Elon, the Wildcats managed hits in the next two frames, and eventually converted into runs in the eighth as they took a 7-0 lead on a pair of hits. With one out, Weiss reached safely courtesy of the third error by the Phoenix, and Chase FitzPatrick punished Elon with his sixth home run of the season in the next at-bat.
Melillo hit a one-out home run to center field in the bottom of the eighth to bust up the shutout bid, but that was all the Phoenix offense would get and its only extra-base hit. Melillo had two of the Phoenix's three hits in the game, with Corey Harillchak singling in the fourth.
Davidson secured the win on a diving web gem by Shore on the warning track in center field for the last out.
Davidson and Elon will return to action tomorrow at 1 p.m. and complete the series with a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
