Box Score

FARMVILLE, Va. - The Davidson field hockey team was unable to overcome three second-half goals by Longwood and dropped their NorPac Conference opening game, 5-2, Friday night in Farmville, Va.

After falling behind, 1-0, the Wildcats got on the board in the eight minute of the first half courtesy of reigning NorPac Rookie of the Week Kathelijn van der Ven's second career goal. Van der Ven scored on a deflection off of a penalty corner to notch the game at 1-1. She has now scored a goal in back-to-back games, and leads the team with six points on the year.

The Lancers of Longwood then tallied four unanswered goals in a 12-minute span to jump back ahead for good. The scoring rally started at the 34:58 mark, two seconds before halftime, when Carla Beinnewies scored her second of three goals on the night, finding the back of the goal off a penalty corner. Bennewies, who had her first career hat trick, also scored in the 45th minute of the second half.

Despite facing a four-goal defecit, the 'Cats kept fighting throughout the rest of the game, and were rewarded with six minutes to go when freshman Krista Jackson, seeing her first action in a Davidson uniform, collected a loose ball in the box and put it past the Longwood goalkeeper for her first career goal, putting the score at the final 5-2.

Longwood topped the Wildcats 16-12 in shots, and 10-8 in penalty corners in the game, with both teams recorded three saves apiece.

With the loss, Davidson had their two-game winning streak snapped and fell to 2-3 on the year. Longwood picked up its second conference victory, and now has a 2-4 mark overall. The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday when they face off against Towson in a neutral site game in Farmville. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
