DAVIDSON, N.C. – Marist running back Bo Ehikioya rushed for 222 yards and three touchdowns, and the Red Foxes held off a late-game rally by Davidson to defeat the Wildcat football team 24-19 Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
With his team trailing by 12 points, Kirk Konert caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Alexander with 1:07 left on the clock. The Wildcats went for the onside kick but were whistled for touching the ball before it went 10 yards, and Marist (4-7) ran out the clock to ice the game.
Alexander completed 22-of-37 passes for 189 yards and two TDs, and the senior surpassed 9,000 career-passing yards (9,132). Konert finished the day with 40 yards on three receptions, and Myles Potter caught five passes for 46 yards. Chad Barnes rushed for 44 on nine carries, while Peter Bakke and Tyler Lemons led the Davidson defense with 11 and 10 tackles, respectively.
The Wildcats (3-7) trailed 10-3 at the half but tied the game 4:12 into the third quarter on a 3-yard pass from Alexander to Kirk Benedict.
Davidson took a 12-10 lead with a safety with 9:13 left in the frame after the Marist long snapper sailed a wind-aided snap over punter Kevin Pauly's head and into the end zone. Pauly was forced to kick the ball out of the back of the end zone to avoid any more damage.
The Red Foxes put together a nine-play, 64-yard drive, capped by an Ehikioya 8-yard touchdown run 3:37 into the fourth quarter, to regain the lead. Marist went for two and converted it on a pass from Chris Debowski to Robert Spano for the 18-12 cushion.
A Davidson fumble on its own 7-yard line led to another rushing TD for Ehikioya with 6:49 left in the game. The Red Foxes went for two again, but didn't get it this time, leaving the score at 24-12.
“It really goes back to untimely turnovers, which have been an issue for us all season,” said Davidson coach Tripp Merritt. “We just can't turn the ball over in those situations.”
Davidson closes out the campaign at home next Saturday as the Wildcats host Butler at noon at Richardson Stadium.
Game Notes: Next Saturday will be Senior Day and the final contest for 13 seniors… It was the first contest between Marist and Davidson on the gridiron… Potter surpassed the 1,000-yard career receiving mark, and Bakke went over 200 tackles for his career… Davidson is now 8-4 in its last 12 games at Richardson Stadium.
