CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The Davidson women's basketball team held College of Charleston to just one field goal over a nine-minute stretch in the second half, while placing four players in double figures for third time this year to earn their 12th straight win against the Cougars with a 66-51 Southern Conference victory at John Kresse Arena on Wednesday evening.

The Wildcats, who wrapped up a four-game road trip with an even 2-2 mark, ran its conference record to 2-0 and its overall record to 8-5. CofC fell to 1-1 in the SoCon and 5-7 on season.

Davidson ran its series record to 19-4 against Charleston, and moved its road win streak against CofC to six in a row. The 'Cats have not lost to the Cougars since Jan. 26, 2002.

Davidson held the Cougars to just 29 percent shooting on the evening, including a 3-for-16 performance from the three-line. After giving up 11 second chance points in the first half, the 'Cats clapped down on the boards. They hauled in 24 of their game-high 41 rebounds in the second period and did not allow a single second-chance point in the second half.

Offensively, Davidson was just as assertive led by junior Mercedes Robinson's (Baltimore, Md.) fifth double-double of the season. She closed out the evening with a game-high 16 points and tacked on a career-best 14 rebounds. In addition the junior forward dished out a couple of assists, while matching her career highs in blocks (2) and steals (5).

Sophomore Julia Paquette (Stockbridge, Ga.) registered her seventh double-figure scoring game with 12 points, while senior Danielle Hemerka (Blackwood, N.J.) and sophomore point guard Alex Thompson (Asheville, N.C.) added 10 points each. Hemerka and Thompson combined for 10 of Davidson's 17 assists.

With 12:17 remaining and trailing 41-39 after the Cougars turned an eight-point deficit into the two-point advantage with an 11-2 run, Davidson took over with authority. The Wildcats rattled off a 16-2 run over the next nine minutes to grab a 55-43 lead.

Defensively, the Wildcats held CofC to just a single bucket ( 1-of-7 from the fiel), while forcing the Cougars to cough the ball up five times over the nine minute stretch.

Thompson then helped seal the conference victory by hitting all four of the 'Cats eight free throws in the last minute for the 66-51 road win.

The Wildcats, who held CofC to 26.5 percent shooting (9-34) in the first half, used a combined 12 points from Hemerka and junior Kelly Gassie (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) to grab an early 13-3 lead.

Later, Robinson rattled off five straight points to push Davidson's advantage to 24-13 with 5:27 remaining in the opening half. The 'Cats though scored just two more buckets after Robinson's free throw at the 5:27 mark.

The Cougars kept pace, despite having stretches for five and four minutes where they would not score, to close within five points at halftime. Deidra Jones came off the bench in the closing minutes of the first period to score Charleston's last six points and bring her team within a score of 28-23 at intermission.

Jones finished with 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting to lead three Cougars in double figures.

Besides Jones' efforts off the bench, College of Charleston crashed the glass for 14 offensive rebounds in the opening half and scored 11 second chance points.

Davidson welcomed back Ashley Lax (Little Rock, Ark.) and senior co-captain Katie Hamilton (Lilburn, Ga.) after both battled early season injuries. They played a combined 12 minutes in their return.

For the first time since Dec. 15, Davidson returns home to John M. Belk Arena where it starts a three-game stretch on Jan. 5 against Western Carolina at 2 p.m. The two schools split their two-game series last season, with each team earning their win on the road.
